There is always this Doomsday type spin put onto these things. Apple's security chip, Microsoft telemetry, and the like. Conspiracy theories abundant every time. Articles written by unaccredited, uncertified, supposed "experts" going on and on about it for 6 months to a year; and then all discussion of it just quietly dematerializes. It's like IT clickbait and always ends up just a waste of text.

MacOS is already declining, dropped from 21% to 15%,
Linux is barely over 5% (and, if you count ChromeOS with it),
Windows is somewhat flatlining above 70%, I suspect addition of WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) helped to retain Windows as host OS even for some Linux-friendly devs/admins

Depends on where really. If you discount Chromebooks for school and laptops bought in bulk by your workplace, Apple is close to having 40% of the desktop market share in the US and already owns more than 60% of the phone market there. Not having Apple is genuinely becoming a social stigma in the US. English speaking countries generally are all on the same Apple-trajectory. Same for Japan, Norway and Switzerland.

 

That's actually Linux territory as far as I know. Although I'm talking about really huge and expensive applications besides critical.

Indeed. I thought early last year's stats were a trend. Strange this happened, but this Recall thing will definitely ruin Window's popularity a lot. By jow much, we'll see. And it's hard to believe MacOS is declining. What other's said. Weird.

This stats is made by monitoring www visits to popular websites, btw. That should be pretty accurate.

even microsoft fan boi's are up in arms about this one. you can see why if you just consider the implications.
down side, it captures your passwords, social security number, credit card numbers, anything you use online it puts in one handy data base for hackers to get everything in one go.

1. do not ever run ANY microsoft OS out of the box (OOTB)
2. install a good stripped down and secureable installation ISO like Tiny OS, or GhostSpectre - there are a few of them
3. make certain all of the crap ware is turned OFF and disabled - i.e. store, wallet, a/v, os and software updaters of any kind. etc, etc...

The later the version of OOTB windows OS's are the LEAST secure for the end user. So it's up to the end user to make certain his/her online privacy, security and autonomy is protected if running these tubby POS's. Running a stripped down and controllable windows install + a good VPN will accomplish most of this task for you. Turning OFF all the mickeysoft junk, and installing third party apps for Firewall and A/v make better sense and will allow you to be in control instead of the OEM. As well, allowing the windows os updater to simply run rampant installing what it wants when it wants will get you nothing but dog bit. Use some common sense, and do NOT trust these corporate assholes when they say these OS's are secure and safe to use OOTB because they are flat out lying to you.

The simple fact is there is no good OOTB or OEM solution these days that favors the end user's privacy, security and autonomy. Apple folks are encountering just as much quicksand rolling on this terrain as the PC folks, so it's up to the end user to step up and get their online ducks in a row. This latest "Recall" debacle is just another in a series of MS blunders that will get pushed on the unsuspecting and trusting if they aren't careful. Just follow a few simple rules and you won't be a mark for MS's bullshit tactics.

another tip, never put your real name in your computer when you create an account or register software. ie don't put your real name in microsoft word, when you install it. it will be embedded in every document you create.

I usually name my computer acct after the computer its on, ie DELL7250, etc. don't save your passwords on your computer either.
also use cash and don't do banking on a computer, go to the bank talk to a a human. don't make it easy to get your data.

It's a nightmare scenario for Microsoft. The headlining feature of its new Copilot+ PC initiative, which is supposed to drive millions of PC sales over the next couple of years, is under significant fire for being what many say is a major breach of privacy and security on Windows. That feature in question is Windows Recall, a new AI tool designed to remember everything you do on Windows.


On paper, it's a cool idea. As CEO Satya Nadella described it, Windows now has a photographic memory that uses AI to triage and index everything you've ever done on your computer, enabling you to semantically search for things you've seen using natural language. It's a new and improved way of finding things on Windows, and in our testing of the feature, it works really well.



However, for a tool like this to be feasible, trust between the user and the platform is required, a luxury Microsoft doesn't appear to have with its Windows user base right now. Recall operates by taking and storing captures of your screen every few seconds to build a database that the user can later search, with screenshots as visual aids. That database is stored locally on your device and never uploaded to the cloud.


In fact, Microsoft goes so far as to promise that it cannot see the data collected by Windows Recall, that it can't train any of its AI models on your data, and that it definitely can't sell that data to advertisers. All of this is true, but that doesn't mean people believe Microsoft when it says these things. In fact, many have jumped to the conclusion that even if it's true today, it won't be true in the future.

Think EDGE, the browser you can't uninstall, now with even more Big Brother in every screenshot.....

 

they are using a neural network chip to scan the screen shots with Optical Character Recognition, (OCR) which creates a text file of all the text on your screen when the screenshot was made, it probably removes redundant data and only keeps changes between screen shots, these go in a SQL database on your local computer (for now - per microsoft) - so all that shit is eating up space on your SSD.

intall linux mint, dump windows. its a conveyor belt to big brother. thats your easy free fix. Don't buy a computer with Nerual Processor chip (NPU). Don't buy a computer with a NPU and windows 11. both are requirements to run Windows Recall.

 

Besides the datahoarding topic:
I (and i guess i'm not alone with that) would like to see one or another tiny/lite/safe OS Version on the SiSi.
It doesn't have to be the ultranewest, just a stable and lightweight W10 and/or W11 Version for us audiofreaks.
Maybe some of those mentioned by Sinewave, saccamano and Xupito.
Would this be possible?
It would be a very nice gimmick to have, as we all check there on a daily base, don't we?

one must understand implications and repurcussions. If you kill everyone you find annoying eventually you will be very lonely or dead or both, it would allow others to also kill everyone who is annoying. you see how this could snowball?

now think of all the stupid things you ever googled, like how to shove a golfball into your rectum, or how can I steal free netflix or where can i download the latest Naive Instruments software for free with a really good crack? etc,etc,etc.

God lets us forget things so we don't remember how often we are idiots. its a feature not a bug. why would you want a publicly acccesible data base of all your bad moments, fuckups and face plants available to the police, the government,hackers your jealous wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, computer repair guy. Indian call center hacker, lawyers, police, did I mention Police? let me just say POLICE here in case anyone thinks this a great idea and wants to get onboard with this idea.
