Microsoft is not giving up on its controversial Windows Recall, though says it will give customers an option to opt in instead of having it on by default, and will beef up the security of any data the software stores.

Recall, for those who missed the dumpster fire, was announced on May 20 as a "feature" on forthcoming Copilot+ Windows PCs. It takes a snapshot of whatever is on the user's screen every few seconds. These images are stored on-device and analyzed locally by an AI model, using OCR to extract text from the screen, to make past work searchable and more accessible.

The ultimate goal for Recall is to record nearly everything the user does on their Windows PC, including conversations and app usage, as well as screenshots, and present that archive in a way that allows the user to remind themselves what they were doing at some point in the past and pull up relevant files and web pages to interact with again. The archive can be searched using text, or the user can drag a control along a timeline bar to recall activities.

I hope the government has access to this data in order to ensure our safety.

Maybe R2R are willing to extend their field of operation, and present a more "user friendly" windows version one day.
Maybe if we ask nicely enough.

Honestly, a feature like that sounds super useful, but the privacy concerns are obviously too high. I wonder what a workable solution would be for us to have access to such a system, imagine how easy you could search your stuff.

Google is doing exactly this for more than a decade.
    And Apple too.
    So what ?

Everytime one company is doing shady things, ppl act like it was the first time.
And like THAT company is worse than others.

It is always funny, as an example, to see Apple fanboys bashing Windows ... and looking at their Apple "privacy" just after.

So this is new and it needs to be publicly known.
So people can learn it just like with Google and Apple with a quick search

BTW, I'm not sure at all Google takes snapshots regularly. Apple could but probably doesn't even need it

The option should be to install or, not install the feature. The same could also be said for Edge which is integrated into Windows.

Microsoft has deteriorated to the point of Windows now being the desktop equivalent of dodgy bargain bin Android phone that comes pre-loaded with unremovable Malaysian Candy Crush written in JavaScript by half a dozen 12 year olds in a basement in Kuala Lumpur that definitely won't steal your crypto wallet and transfer it to the Russian FSB when granted permission to access your files to store your highscores.

I'm surprised nobody had made an OS just for mission critical applications. We don't even need 99% of the crap that comes with Windows.

Controlling actions and behavior and personal information by informed people is better than being controlled by ignorant people. Let them record all our moments. We have nothing left to lose. We have already lost everything.:shalom:

There are very nice and lite Windows versions. My 2nd OS on my laptop is W10 "PhoenixOS Superlite". Incredibly nice for audio and gaming. Stripped of all unnecessary MS bloat. I tested a couple of various "lite" W10 versions and think another one worth considering is W10 "Ghost Spectre Superlite/Lite". It is slightly heavier than PhoenixOS but still really nice. I'm sure there are W11 versions of both. Search is your friend.

Regarding "Recall", Microsoft is pushing for complete control of Windows computers. First you got a "secure" boot, then a "secure" TPM chip, and now a "very helpful" AI assistant. Your computer is less and less yours, and Microsoft is pushing its agenda patiently, in stages. This will help the poor sods collect more data about you and make more money, because it's never enough.

Microsoft seems to be annoyed with having too many users :), so they want to see another 20% of users go and use Mac and Linux. About 10'ish years ago Windows was an absolute desktop OS king with 90% market share, and the rest was mostly Mac, Linux and other OSes only 2-3%. Nowadays it's like Windows 65%, MacOS 25%, Linux around 5% or more, I think. My prediction for the near future is Windows around 40%, MacOS around 40%, Linux around 10% or even more. That's really good for everybody, actually, that MS is shooting itself in the foot. It makes a lot of people like me happy and entertained.

"Controlling actions and behavior and personal information by informed people is better than being controlled by ignorant people."

-wtf does that mean? Sounds like you rationalized being spied on by strangers and their servers.

"Let them record all our moments."

-No, the correct answer is to Resist having your moments recorded.

You do not sound like a leader of Men.

Is there anything easier than ctrl+f? I relatively often search my file system in Linux and ctrl+f works very fast. There's no need for any AI assistants for searching. AI assistants are useful for other things. Like research of some kind and creativity boost, even chat with it.
