Installing vintage tuners on a telecaster

Discussion in 'Guitars' started by Vincent Price, Apr 19, 2024.

  1. Hello

how easy it is to install vintage tuners onto a telecaster neck? I’m planning to replace the neck on my Baja and want to use the Baja current tuners

Had a quote to get someone to do it but wondering if this is something I would be able to do myself?

    Thanks

get a screw driver. remove old tuners.
put tuners in new neck, replace screws.

    done.

is your neck predrilled for tuners?

it is quite easy and reversible if you don't like them or the neck.
you may need to add a string tree if the strings don't break enough to get a proper sound. I usually add one but some folks are
funny about them like everything its an individual choice. These are also quite easy to add or remove.

there's always some bugger who's done it before so just watch and learn

  6. It’s the potential reamer that worries me

micrometers are quite cheap these days, get one and check the diameter of your tuners and the diameter of the hole.
it may fit without reaming. I changed the tuners on my bass and they were plug and play, literally 5 minutes with a screwdriver, course there are only 4 tuners on a bass..

@Vincent Price - I would assume since your replacement neck is also Made in Mexico your Baja "PING" tuners will drop right in without any mods. However if I were you, I'd find out the part number & get the specs on the tuner hole size to save yourself any headache just in case.

BTW - What is the model name of your Baja?

I'm in the west. & that replacement neck you showed me is not available here. Also, not all replacement neck specs are the same accross the board.Send me a link to the neck you found on the Fender website.

Take one off and try it.

if it seems like it'll be dificult, ie needs drilled, then put the old one back it and take it to some one pro to do it.

i'd get the calipers, you can never tell what you'll get till you measure it yourself.

@Vincent Price - According to the FMIC Baja CLASSIC PLAYER BAJA TELE manual. The bushings part # from your Baja is 0053020000. Which were made in Taiwan by Ping. The Inner diameter is 0.239″ & the outer diameter is 0.360″.

Those bushings should be perfect for your replacement neck pegholes, if it is what you told me earlier ".358” (9.09mm)".

Keep in mind. You want your bushings to be ever so slightly larger than the peg hole so you get a good solid snug fit. When I say "ever so slightly" I'm talking in thousands of an inch here. Common practice when installing bushings into a new headstock is to lightly and evenly use 125 then 225 sandpaper over a dowel in the peg holes to give them more releif for the bushing if necessary. Its not uncommon to get new necks with slightly smaller peg holes due to varying manufacturing process tolerance's. Using a reamer to widen the holes for your new neck would be unnecessary & you would risk widening them too much before you even got a full 360 turn. So skip the reamer PLEASE. Also keep in mind, bushings should never just "drop in". When installing them, it needs to feel tighter than a dolphins asshole when trying to push those babies in. To insure you install your bushings in straight, you can make a quick easy jig with a small block of wood a thick piece of leather like a belt, a bolt & a nut. If you have anymore questions feel free. If not, Cheers!!!
