Kontakt is the worst thing, why did we adopt this as a standard?

Gigastudio! Been awhile since I heard that name... that was a pretty solid system back when, great for composing and latency low etc...

    Tascam killed it huh?

Kinda like Gibson killing Opcode and then trying to kill Oberheim.... f'ers.

I'd say it a sixth time if I believed the effort to get it through your head would work if you'd like, but sometimes you just realize you can't unstupid "stupid", and call it a day.

This is not the point, we also have UVI, Eastwest , Best Service OPUS. Like literally any company that has a sample player works 100x better than kontakt. They load 200gb libraries like nothing and they are easy and fun to browse

Then we have kontakt with nicnts, nks files, all the mess and the 3 digit SNPID so you need to double check from your registry. Its just crap theres nothing more to say about it.

All we need is tool to convert kontakt libraries to some other program and its over for native instruments. Like its over for their synths, their sample libraries, everything they ever did coz it plain sucks ass

This is not a "we" problem, this is a "you" problem.

It's my most used sampler plugin, and as far as I'm concerned, nothing comes close for me, so at least it's definitely not a "me" problem.

it was amazing as it was first introduced, remember introduction was around 2003/2004, in the two decades simply new ideas and standard changed a lot.
Also NI became very stubborn and inflexible due to money problems. so yeah we hang around now with a weird old standard in plugin sampling.

im still using Kontakt5, works great, only problem is that small GUI which was only in K7 solved, otherwise its still not so easy to create instruments in K7.

what would be a good replacement for Kontakt7 today?

Ooof I remember when it came out (I was still a Cubase user at the time), and I can vaguely remember 'trying it' and it being a clunky beast (and I was still using an AKAI S series and an EMU ESI at the time so that should say a lot). When Kontakt came out, it wasn't much better, but NI had the marketing push and at the time they were on top of the world with Generator/Reaktor, Absynth, etc.. I switched over to Logic Platinum around that time and bought the EXS24 and thought it was worlds easier to use then both.. Now 20 something years later, back to Cubase and just bought Halion last year, wouldn't change it for the world. Tried Kontakt many times over the years, went back to EXS24 or something like Phatmatik Pro instead every time. Halion didn't even need a walkthrough to set up my first preset..

Maybe folks might think Halion is a 'Cubase only' thing? Its an AU/VST just like anything else, but its always advertised paired up with Cubase so Steinberg should maybe rethink that and get it out and about more.

Opus is by eastwest. It's distributed by many companies, one of them is best service. Best service sell a lot of kontakt libraries as well, incidentally. It's a sample player only. And I think to say that literally any sampler that isn't from NI will work a hundred times better than kontakt is just a very silly thing to say, and clearly hyperbole.

Personally I have my kontakt libraries organised on HD so they are fundamentally easy to browse. I don't use the side panel with all the pictures and stuff, I find it bloats the instance size so I've hidden and turned as much of that stuff off as I can. So my use case is slightly different to yours I think.

I develop my own libraries and like to customise existing libraries to suit my workflow. You stated that 'this is not the point' but I beg to differ, it is exactly the point from my perspective. Kontakt allows deep programming with tools that are excellent for crafting sampled instruments. I come from a hardware background (akai, Roland) and have used pretty much every software sampler. I enjoy Falcon as well, and would have probably gone with that if it had been available 22 years ago, but it was relatively late to the party. So given that, I cannot think of another solution that offers the sheer quality and quantity of tools than Kontakt. Engine is a joke in comparison, so buggy and unstable. As was yellow tools independence. Shame really because that seemed to have great potential, but there it is.

The point, if I may, is that you began this thread by essentially asking : Why Kontakt? Well, in spite of your ineptitude at organising libraries, I have not seen a credible argument against : Why not Kontakt?

It's not, as you state 'just a frame for libraries'. That may be how you see it, because it's how you use it, but it's not generally true.

NI synths are excellent workhorses, even the really old ones like Absynth. I use a combination of uhe and NI synths and find they get the job done wonderfully.

If NI stuff 'sucked ass' I don't think they would be as successful and prolific as they are, do you? Your assessment seems more rooted in your current frustration with browsing and organising your libraries, which, to echo other voices in this thread, does seem to be clearly a 'you thing'. So I don't think you are being rational, factual or very credible frankly.

What is stopping you from converting your Kontakt libraries to, say, Engine. Why not just do that if that is what you want?

Imagine if this thread was this: protools-is-the-worst-thing-why-did-we-adopt-this-as-a-standard

Would so many posts be discussing the technical merits of the software? Or would they be answers to the original question. "Why did this become the industry standard?". That part has nothing to do with someone's personal opinions, lack of ability, etc. If the OP had left out his personal issues and bitching, is it such an unfair question to ask? Personally, I think their copy protection has a lot to do with it. Is's like Cubase being changed to allow it to be "cracked". They make so much money from Kontakt, they could just as easily throw money at it to lock out non-paying users. If they did that, how many would continue using it?

Sure, or indeed Photoshop or any number of other examples. It's fair to say that if you ask a different question you'd likely get a different answer.

But yes, generally the answer is that it was widely the best option at the time of its release and remained so for long enough to become 'what the professionals use'. And therefore industry standard.
It remains industry standard because the industry initially grows around its capabilities, and then the tool evolves those core capabilities to track the industry.

A bit like asking why does Hollywood use protools and not Reaper? Reaper is way better than protools in almost every way. But sadly it's not the industry standard for the stated reasons.. It wasn't there 'at the time' and it's core function is not to service that particular industry directly.

There are open standards. SFZ for example.
