@MMJ2024 I know you are a privileged musician, it's really a great pity to leave your powerful profession and go play with images and such.

Urgh, this isn't an easy thing to transmit.

First of all, it is decent work and none of us know how much was spent, what raw footage there was, the if there was external input was in the creative direction and decision making.

None of us also know how close you are to the subject matter and how you experience influenced the decisions based on your internal filtering.

I understand the intent and style, overly lead singer focused, the random pans, blurs and late cuts it's been done before off the top of my head without looking anything up Mungo Jerry,Tallah, RATM, KORN, Disturbed.

There is a disconnect in energy, the story as cinematography versus the energy as musical product. It's like you are doing your best to be an edge lord but then you just pack up at the end and the only thing left is blue balls. The images don't have to have anything to do with music but the energy must match up and that's a hard concept to get across without being in the same room with someone and having a discussion. It is assuredly more than I am willing to do on a music forum. I just don't have the time and I am not a good teacher for subtle things like that.

You didn't do anything wrong, if you got your vision you got what you wanted and that's in your head but it's just not evident to us or just me that wasn't there and can't read minds.

The lack of a connection for the people that weren't there might have been a goal. Maybe that's what you are after and maybe not. The issue is as a work of cinematography it can either be aimed at those who weren't there or a complete inside job. You don't get a guarantee that anyone is going to watch it over and over again for Easter eggs. I like the hubris, nobody accomplishes anything worth while by thinking small, but it needs a bit polish.

For me needs more edge, more energy along with a bit more focus and a connection. The images and the subject matter don't need to line up, it doesn't need to the Beatles on Top of the Pops in the 60s, but the images just frustrate the flow of energy and it just doesn't line up.

That was work.

Give it a while when you've disconnected, disassociated and have mentally released yourself from the experience of creating the video you'll see things differently.

Don't force it, over think it or give it a second though, it all comes with time. The most important thing is to keep doing it and move on to the next one.

 

I have to admit after reading MMJ's other thread about music theory, I was expecting 12-tone music or maybe neo-classic. But it's fucking metal!1

 

He absolutely has the ability to make them, but then instead of the girls and boys who are dancing and stomping, he has to find other listeners.

It is ok for a first release, I dig it!

But if I may, I don't like the camera pan that much. Maybe, he is trying to follow the action...

You can use different transitions or effects to peep it a little more, considering it is a small venue and the cameras were very close. The fans - can also be part of the show...

Also, each camera should focus on one (or two) specific member(s) of the band - so you can have more choices when editing...you hardly see the drummer, who sings too...and the singer is too close. When possible, have them framed approximately the same size. The colors are vivid, but sometimes they bleach.

Here is an example...look what each camera is doing, angles, and try make your cameramen and musicians aware of their part!

I'm not an expert, so I'm looking at this from the perspective of an average viewer.
For me, it makes a very good and balanced impression. Both in terms of the music and the look, cuts, viewangles and colors in the video.
If I had seen the video without prior knowledge, I wouldn't have given it a second thought and would have thought it was a professional production.
So all in all, great job.

 

I think if you can put an endoscopic camera in the singer's larynx, it will be more effective. It also induces more fear.

I made this for him as a gift.

 

I'm a bit surprised that no one seems to have a problem with the switching between 24p and 60p during the whole clip. For me this is quite annoying and breaking the flow, but I know that this is also a subjective thing because different people seem to notice it more or less.
