Many fortune-tellers said there will be a new big f*ck up with the ILM from Pace. And guess what, they were right. The mess is developing right now.

Seems like Pace is stealing licenses from their customers... And telling them not to contact support, bescause "support is not able to assist".
At least the last part is nothing new. :)

It's 3 o'clock now and I'm tired of writing, so here is a link you can use to start your research.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but this doesn't sound like it would be an issue if you only installed ilok so that some of the R2R Izotope releases would work, right? If not, will uninstalling it be of any value, or is the damage done? Those R2R releases are my only purpose for having ilok on my machine, so getting rid of it wouldn't be any huge loss.

I guess we need more info, yes????

BTW, a very happy holiday to those observing it today!

Ironically I think it's really only a problem for those with legitimate licenses.

    Happy holidays Rico.[IMG]

    Thank you for the advice.
In my case, I have installed pace protected software combining legit installers and cracked ones.
Until now, I never have had problems. It's my experience.
By the other side, try to use other computer and OTHER internet connection to install a fresh ilok manager. Then, check there yous dongles and try a maintenance. It is possible thst the PC you are using have problems with the applications and system resources that ilok uses. I have a similar problem after some windows updates. Now I have to update my dongle on other PC.
I hope this experience become useful for you.

From the limited reading on it, that's what it sounded like to me, as well. I suppose if you don't have any legitimate licenses on your machine, there can't be a helluva lot to steal from you. I have to say though, I struggled a lot with the idea of installing ilok just to use those couple of R2R Izotrope releases. Now I'm a bit sorry that I did.

Thanks for your holiday wishes Catalyst. Regards!

Yeah I hate that iLok nonsense, I had installed it primarily for Soundtoys 4.1.8 and that doesn't even work on Windows 8 as I soon found out.

I'm finding more and more that you can get alot of stuff working on Win 8, but admittedly it's a struggle. You might google for a little utility called "Take Ownership", I've found it helpful. It leaves an entry in the right-click explorer menu where it will allow you to auto-run a .bat file that changes permissions so that you can adjust files letting them be fully accessed and modified. That's generally where the problem is on Win 8 -- they have all this security crap that makes it extremely difficult to do things that are fairly commonplace. You can be the administrator and single user of a computer, and still not be allowed to modify files! It's mind-boggling.

Anyway, I make no promises but you can find that 'take ownership' utility here: http://www.howtogeek.com/downloads/TakeOwnership.zip . You might also try a program called 'Registrar Registry Manager V. 7'. I think I found a copy over at Avax. It helps open up a good many locked registry entries in Win 8 that can't otherwise be deleted or modified. Perhaps between those 2 programs you may find an answer to your SoundToys dilemma.

Thanks a lot Rico, I'll run some experiments with those. A bunch of us Windows 8 people are trying to get this thing running. At first I thought it might be the updated drivers that Pace released now branded as the iLok License Manager but it turned out that wasn't it. It also ties in to jBridge because the problem is that the Soundtoys stuff we have is all 32 bit so I have to bridge and though Windows 7 people have it running on 8 I get a failed to load VST during bridging. Perhaps I could finally get it working because for now I've reverted back to the 4.0.2 which didn't have the protection integrated yet where it checks if the dll has been patched. If only we had a 64 bit version we would be golden but sadly that came out after they implemented that Pace crap.

A good starting point (and one that doesn't take up much time) is to run that 'take ownership' utility on your soundtoys folder, then go to the properties tab for whatever .exe and .dll files you find under soundtoys and open them up fully for security permissions (under the security tab in properties). I've done a routine similar to that on 100 different files in Win 8 and it's gotten some of them finally doing what I want them to do. Also, another thing I'm frequently noticing in Win 8 is that there's an auto function of some sort that sets files downloaded from the web to automatically be unable to write or modify anything. You'll also find that in the right-click properties tab in the form of a check-box -- it's worth looking at just to make sure all permissions are opened up. 99% of the time if something isn't working properly in Win 8 it's because you don't have proper permissions set up to do what you want to do.

Funny story -- I had a series of emails recently with a guy who wrote some software called "Axcrypt". If you're not familiar with it, it's a small encryption utility that's very well done, and fairly popular. This guy has awesome programming chops, very bright guy. He told me straight up, he can't figure out how to get file permissions working in Win 8 -- no one can! If there's a problem on Win 8, that's the very first place to be looking, but the catch is you may not be able to figure out how to do what it is you're trying to do.

    Hope that helps.

This is just one of the reasons I would never use a dongle. Also, it is way too much hassle in every way, I would feel like I'm being punished for using a dongle. I would feel like someone handcuffed me and said "now play the piano". People should support developers who don't use any dongles and especially who use friendly protections. Fuck those who use dongles for protection of their software. Personally, I don't find one piece of software that uses a dongle for protection any superior to even some freeware plugins. In other words, it is just not worth it. I don't even think about them any more. As soon as I see "dongle protected" I just ignore.

I love freedom and freedom is to carry all your software with you on a stick with all the registrations and serials. Thankfully, lots of software I use is also simply freeware or magware. It's really not so much about the tools you use, it's about you - how you use it.

This fiasco was bound to happen and it will keep happening until people realise what kind of a prison is really dongle protected software and what kind of criminals are actually these software protection firms. They're possibly even worse than the firms that sell antivirus software. I don't envy those people at all. I pity them, especially when they say "I bought this just because I know it hasn't been cracked" with that mad, greedy capitalist glare in their eyes. What a sad excuse to buy something. Poor souls... better work on refining your skills than worry about your software and completely unnecessary hassle like that.

    Cheers!

    Yes, I'm with you!
Note that as long as the iLok2-Eden-CRAP remains un-cracked the developers will feel secure…… this will end when finally successful cracks will appear. Then we'll have again all the freedom to use software without any totalitarian impositions by the manufacturers!

I'm totally with you. That's the way I see it, myself. Especially when you look at those crazy arguments dongle head developers use.
"My company would be driven outta business." Wrong! Look at honest developers like Cytomic or U-He. They HATE ilok and,
are still in the game and will remain there. Even those people and their products have been affected by that crappy ILM.

Urs is a cool dude. Chatted with him many times about god and the world. Steven Slate would take the money and,
probably spend it in a strip club, anyway.

It's all about freedom against security! Seriously, f*ck those dongle b*tches! Hopefully some are smart enough and willing to learn.

The last time iLock had an update it took weeks to sort it out...You would have though then that the
developers would have learned their lessons. It might get real nasty now...Especially since a LOT of
die-hard believers/users of iLock were pissed the last time this happened..If Cakewalk would go
the Mac route...I'd love to use them again but since I went Mac I use PT ( I really like PT but
since Cakewalk was in business I used them)....

    Death to iLock......

Another reason why I even like PLugin All1ance software they stoped using iLock system...
