Early Summer by Ozu was the last thing that I truly enjoyed very deeply. The other being Monty Python...I've watched the 4 seasons 5-6 times by now...I can't believe how I missed them till now...Keep watching good movies & have a good time.

    There is no gatekeeping.
All the information you need is available on the Internet.
Your problem is probably that you don't know where to look. Or that you can't tell the difference between useful information and bad advice. We've all been there. It gets easier with time (and more experience).

Youtube is the worst way to learn any of this stuff. It's fine for one specific task; but to really learn stuff you have to see the entire process. Certain steps in a workflow only make sense if you do the rest of the workflow.

It's like trying to use parts of ten cooking recipes to make one thing. Forget Youtube. Ask for tutorial video recommendations and then watch the whole thing so you can see the whole picture. Don't even waste the time picking them out yourself. People have already watched them all and can tell you which will be a waste of your time and efforts. Most of these people on Youtube should still be learning, not teaching anyone.

You learn Serum by learning Serum. Complaining about "gatekeeping" doesn't learn you anything. There is no gatekeeping. There is stupidity and entitlement and no willing to learn anything. There is wanting to be spoon fed on your side. You are the problem.

and there maybe some genetic engineering involved - part of the gatekeeping, making you work with only 2 hands.

    That scene is impressive.

However, a blockbuster that is basically ripping off Paprika and spends two thirds of the film having the main character EXPLAINING EVERY SINGLE THING TO YOU TO MAKE SURE YOUR RETARDED ASS WILL GET IT AND IF YOU STILL DON'T GET IT HERE LET ME REPEAT MYSELF FOR THE UMPTEENTH TIME THE MAIN CHARACTER EXPLAINS EVERY SINGLE THING WHICH IS BASICALLY A DUMBED DOWN VERSION OF PAPRIKA WITH CALL OF DUTY GRAPHICS REALLY is not what I call a masterpiece

    BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM :keys:

And that's every single Nolan film, minus the Paprika ripoff part lol.
I was enjoying The Prestige until the last 10 minutes where HE EXPLAINED EVERYTHING TO ME AS IF I WAS A RETARDED CHILD EVEN THOUGH EVERYTHING WAS ALREADY SUPER EASY TO UNDERSTAND WHY DOES HE DO THAT DOES THE BELIEVE WE'RE TOO RETARDED TO UNDERSTAND HIS GENIUS OR WHAT BRO YOU'RE NOT THAT SMART YOU'RE JUST ANOTHER HOLLYWOOD PRETENDER.
    BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM :drummer:

And even when his films could be interesting he has to inject EXTREMELY BLAND AND CLICHE EMOTIONAL SUBPLOTS BECAUSE OTHERWISE THE RETARDED AUDIENCE WOULD BE CONFUSED BECAUSE WE'RE RETARDED AND CAN'T UNDERSTAND TIME TRAVEL EVEN THOUGH WE'VE BEEN WATCHING FILMS ABOUT IT AND PLAYING "WHAT IF"S SINCE WE WERE KIDS SO FOR THOSE OF US WHO ARE TOO RETARDED TO UNDERSTAND EVEN THOUGH EVERYTHING IS OVER-EXPOSED HERE'S A TEARJERK SCENE SO WE WON'T FEEL CHEATED OUT OF OUR MONEY OR IN MY CASE MY TORRENT DOWNLOAD SLOTS.
    BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM :break:

Don't even get me started on his Batmans. He somehow managed to take a retarded character and make it even less interesting.
Although there are some cool shots, I admit (like the plane hijacking scene in the film with the guy who speaks through a radiator).

    BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM :dj:

And for someone who supposedly champions realism WHY DOES THE BEACH IN DUNKIRK LOOK LIKE A NUDIST BEACH FFS I'VE SEEN PUBLIC BEACHES MORE CROWDED THAN THAT ON A WINTER NIGHT YOU COULD FREEZE FRAME AND COUNT HOW MANY SOLDIERS ARE THERE WITHOUT BLINKING THAT SHIT MAKES NO SENSE.

    BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM :speaker:

CINEMA CANDID BE WOULD IT LEAST AT FUMES OWN YOUR TO OFF JERKING YOURSELF FILM JUST POINT SOME AT BRO SERIOUSLY UGH SHOTS MONEY OF AVALANCHE ENDLESS AN LIKE FACE MY IN ALREADY WAS HATE I GIMMICK NOLAN EVERY BECAUSE BUT brain retarded my for complex too was it because not ,minutes five than more Tenet watch even couldn't I and.

    BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM :metal:

I did give Oppenheimer a chance, because I love physics and the Manhattan Project is something that fascinated me as a kid, but it was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BORING DAMNIT IS THE CAT DEAD OR ALIVE NO IT'S DEAD MOTHERFU*KER IT COMMITTED SUICIDE OUT OF BOREDOM NINE.FRIGGIN.TIMES.

    BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM :grooves:

And since this is an audio forum I have to mention HANS ZIMMER THAT FU... you know what? I can't.

    BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM

The only Nolan films I genuinely enjoyed were Insomnia and Memento. I did watch the original Insomnia, however, and found it to be way superior to Nolan's remake. And Memento was super cool the first couple of times I watched it as a kid, but once you get over the backwards forwards gimmick it's not that impressive.

I think Nolan is the most overblown overrated pretentious director in the world and the fact that he's on such a high pedestal says more about the abysmal lack of originality in mainstream film making than anything else.

Next time I'll be tearing a new one to the new kid on the block who might one day dethrone Nolan : Dennis Villeneuve.

    Peace

unfortunately he has to do that otherwise the most watchers wont understand the movie, like they didn't understand tenet.
most people are kinda dumb like that
i saw a titans scene on tv on the other day, he took like 15 minutes to explain the grandfather paradox while nolan explain it in 10 seconds in tenet.

yes, but movies are like this.
psycho is my favorite movie from hitchcock but now that already know that norman bates is the psycho, is not as fun as the first time i watched the movie.

are you saying the other batmans are more interesting than nolan's? batman he took a boring kids superhero movie and made into a whole different thing for older people. What makes batman movies interesting is the philosophy and inspiration, like you can see a lot of similarities between a Tale of Two Cities and the movies, people questioning themselves if its worth to do the right thing or accept the trash city like it is. There's much more.

dunkirk is a large beach with several km in lenght. most soldiers would be concentrated in one spot instead all over the beach like tourists

although you present good arguments, i have to disagree. me personally i think that are a lot of overblown and overrated pretentious directors but nolan's not one of them. if you want i could mention some.

Now out of curiosity: who is your definition of best director alive?

    nice garamondo
I really like those kind of movies too.
I consider Hitchcock a really rich storyteller, he doesn't need much to grab our attention.

added those two to my watchlist!

I think if you have to plainly explain your story, then you failed at telling it properly.

It's one thing to tell multilayered stories that reveal themselves upon close inspection like, say, Kubrick did. Even with hidden meanings, he did have a surface narrative that the average watcher could follow. It's a different thing to tell one story and hit the audience in the head with repetitive exposition.

And I honestly don't find Nolan's stories complex. The Prestige would be a good film hadn't he opted to explain everything as if we're 5 year old kids :suicide:

Not trying to reveal how autistic I am but when I love a film I can watch it until the end of time
I watched everything Kubrick did after Lolita at least 50 times, no exaggeration. I watched The Wire and The Sopranos at least 100 times each, hand to god (okay, a good number of that rewatching happened when I'd work at home and use dual monitors with one monitor always showing either The Wire or The Sopranos lol).

And although it's not my favorite Hitchcock, I've watched Psycho quite a few times too. First time I watched it I was quite shocked at the end, every other time I just enjoyed watching a filmmaking genius operating at peak performance.

And don't get me started on The Big Lebowski. At one point I converted it to mp3 and would listen to it every night falling asleep LOL

I do find Burton's Batman's more interesting, not because I like superheroes (I really don't but am okay with them if the story is well told) but because they're just so goddamn fun. And it's a shame that Schumacher's films overdid the campy thing without having other stuff to compensate, with a few improvements they could've been so much better -they're extremely trippy but fail hard on other aspects.

Nolan's Batmans are, to be fair, very well directed. Probably the only films of his I rewatch every once in a blue moon. But they also suffer from the same ills I find in the rest of his work : they pretend to be way deeper than they actually are. Most of the themes explored are pretty basic moral, ethic, political issues, and I don't find his take on them very enlightened (or enlightening) either :dunno:

I don't have the link right now, but there was an article about Dunkirk where they made comparisons with real world numbers. The beach would've been WAY more crowded than Nolan shows, no matter its size.

To be fair though I'm just repeating what I read, and I haven't fact checked the article itself. Maybe they were wrong too lol.

    By all means

If we don't count the greats who are past their prime (Scorsese, Jodorowsky..) my favorites would be the Coen Bros. Although my top 3 films of theirs are not their most recent I believe they still have the capability of making their ultimate masterpiece :beg:
I also think Tarantino has gotten better with age, although I thought Once Upon... was boring, The Hateful Eight is just amazing.
David Fincher is someone I have immense respect for, even when I don't enjoy a particular film.

Not a director, but showrunner David Simon -The Wire, The Deuce, Generation Kill etc.- is someone who has never disappointed me (except for his stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict, but let's not go there lol).

You know what would be true gatekeeping and simultaneously improve everybody to the next fucking level?

Having software require and test users to read the fine manuals and refuse to work before the user proving that they've read them.

to me that is just insane.

i watched both the wire and the sopranos, 1 time was enough. its just too many seasons
Although i'd probably watch the wire again sometime

    fair enough

    wow i can't stand them.
i'd say burn after reading was one of the worst movies i've ever paid to watch, couldnt see any fun in that. tbh i was expecting some kind of spy/thriller movie, which it wasn't.
their remake of true grit i didnt like either, i liked the original one better.
Hail ceasar i have not seem, but i heard a lot of people talk a lot of shit of that movie.
no country for old men, there's a long time since i last watched but if i recall correctly i felt like it was a crazy movie with crazy people acting crazy.
the problem i have with coen brothers is that i don't se any sense in their movies.
just like PTA. Apart from 'there will be blood' i usually dont see any sense in his movies. i like him directing radiohead music videos though.

David Fincher and Tarantino i also have respect for them. Yes tarantino's 'once upon a time' movie was very different style from his previous. I kinda liked because helps me understand how was hollywood in that time, but agreed the hateful eight was way better.

like i said before, because i don't see any sense in their movies i consider PTA and the Coen bros overrated.
i also just hate everything i see JJ Abrams' name on
michael bay isn't necessarily a bad director, but i'd say he's overrated yes
zack snyder - how tf does this guy keep making movies?
Bong jong hoo - i think hes a pretty decent director but i dont like his stories
    Robert Eggers - i can't stand that guy. too many hidden meanings, too hard to find them, way too freaking slow-paced for this century;
