The struggle is real. My experience (probably unlike every others') I have downsized 3 times only to build back up again. I am compelled to. My solution has become the "hide instrument" feature in my DAW. The instrument is still there, but for now it's dissappeared from the list. Until I do an "unhide" event. I find I need to be able to have all the things within fingertip reach, in the heat of the moment. But not at the beginning. However in the process I have come to be able to say goodby permanently to Reaktor and Kontakt. And I have weeded out mediocre things, that I wouldn't have otherwise. blahblahblah. There has been progress.

Interesting...though, if you're doing mostly EDM and related stuff, then Kontakt isn't necessary, otherwise, you can't avoid it

 

For sample libraries I'm using my onboard Essense XT of Studio One or whatever it's called. I find it to be really slick. One click, and you got a whole new sound ready to go. To each his her they own. For me, I prefer it. I dont need all the libraries, although they are wicked fun. To each his her they own. It'll import nkXX files. I haven't dug into that too deep, but it will.

 

Pareto's Law doesn't directly imply recursion, but it can be tempting to think about it in a layered way when dealing with large numbers. Imagine applying the 80/20 rule recursively - in layers. Following this logic, 20% of the top 20% (4% of the whole) would contribute to 80% of the initial 80% (64% of the whole). This iterative process of analysis helps prioritize efforts and resources extremely effectively.
So if you delete 80% of your plugins, you will probably use just 20% of those remaining ones (4% of the initial number). But that doesn't imply that you should delete 80% of them, since they were sifted already. Just that you should pay more attention to these plugins, getting to know them well in most detail.
Overall, it's best to view recursive Pareto as a strategic approach rather than a precise mathematical formula and use it only with large starting numbers and with utmost care.
So, if you have two girls, you probably use one of them 80% of the time, and the other one 20% of the time; no need to delete any of them. The more overall usage, the more trouble, so it's completely dependent on you.

Over the pandemic I decided to "rebuild" my old studio and purchased a handful of old rack modules I used to own... mostly out of nostalgia, but also because I missed working that way. Apart from the enjoyment I get using physical gear, having a limited palette to work with and committing things to audio keeps everything moving along. I also tend to be a lot more creative developing the sounds I want to hear rather than cycling through endless presets.

Another interesting aspect of working this way is how the overall sound imparts on the music I make. I have several friends who have mentioned that my tracks are not "modern" sounding enough, specifically drums because they tend to sound GM'ish. I'm ok with this for several reasons but mostly because I don't mind the way they sound. There's a familiarity to it that I love, but also, and this is probably the most important aspect for me, it allows me to cultivate a style I feel represents me as a producer. I still use plugins, albeit limited in my selection and mostly for mixing in the box but limiting the software and hardware I use has helped me get there quicker.

It took a hell lot of time to install and keygen them individually, and also do the edit to the hosts file, for years. See no benefit of undoing that. I don't get paralized by options, I've have methods of limiting myself and also have them all, like win/win. What is really paralizing is realizing that you just uninstall something last week that you want to use now cause a guy who creates YT content had to say something about anything with regularity or he's gonna get fucked by the algo. That's gonna take you out of "the zone" instantly

 

I never liked percentages at school, I'm not about to take them seriously now.

I am surprised no-one has mentioned it, but my guess is this guy is using warez. Otherwise, how do you end up with "too many plugins"? By using freeware? Obviously if you spend good money on plugins, you aren't just going to delete them on a whim. I still have a few plugins from PA that were about 10 or 20 dollars; and the only reason I still have them, is because I paid for them.

This 80/20 thing though, I think if you can effectively manage what plugins show up in your plug-in menus, they are not the workflow killers some people say. That's what happens when you have too many plugins, and no established workflow at all. If you just throw plugins at stuff, that's not very efficient, and it won't matter how many you have anyway. Those plugins with the dice icon randomize parameters button is there specifically for this person. The presence of the dice icon, might even be a tipoff you should just delete the plugin right off the bat.
