VCV Rack is a free and open source virtual mudular synthesizer. multiple modules can be connected to synthesize a sound. By default the software contains several VCOs, LFOs, mixers, and other standard synthesizer modules, however more can be added as plugins through the VCV Rack website.

Well, it's... a rack... innit. That uses VCVs.

I guess I would prefer something more useful. Crazy sound effects are something that can be fun to make and fun to use afterwards. If the result is a simple sine wave, what it would have to be if it is about creating the simplest sound, no one will have any benefit from it. That doesn't mean that we can't have a competition like that, but for me it is not very compelling


Maybe limiting the number of modules to make the most complex sound could be fun too

I guess you can put yourself into that box if you decide to do so, but it will be your decision and not your potential that defines it

Greed and hubris happened. Just use Cardinal. Literally the same modules in a better wrapper.
Or, if you're asking about the thread - well, it's a standalone software with clumsy hardware integration. Not usable with DAWs, not usable with hardware. What do you think?
Luckily, Cardinal Rack is just a straight-up VST+VSTi.

At one point it was a nice haven for all the early enthusiasts who got fed up with Belt's bullshit, some super funny shit was going on.

Tried using VCV years ago, but it didn't click for me, especially because it is a standalone. When Cardinal got released that was a VCV revolution for me. So much easier to setup, too. Yes, it's missing the commercial modules, but there are so many you quickly forget about it.

 

Cardinal + rack...better than VCV by a long shot.
