Unless you're in love with owning a brand spank new guitar, I'd suggest going to a music store and playing lots of guitars for a couple weeks or months, then while your their check out the used guitars. There's a whole lotta folks who bought guitars in the last couple of years that aren't playing them and are trying to turn them back into money.

like a car a guitar is usually cheaper used. just look it over, check for dents in the frets, or flat spots. dings in the neck which may cause playability issues, dings in the body, which look bad but usually don't change the playability. test the electronics, check the pots work, check the output jack works. there aint too much to a guitar that can go wrong, it don't take more than 5 minutes to look it over and test it once you know which end is which..

i've owned a couple of new guitars, and a whole bunch of used ones. don't matter none, it ain't the pedigree, its the sound you get and the playability - at least for me..

 

Go to local music shops try guitars that look like they will suit the genre you prefer.
Take your time to find the right one for you even if it takes a week or two and several stores to finally decide.
Get strap locks for the guitar a worthwhile investment of about $10. a set that can avoid a disaster of dropping the guitar.

yeah, but if you're gonna get strap locks, you might as well invest another 20$ on a guitar strap to use them with..
then you'll need picks, and strings, and a tuner, probably a guitar case or bag, guitar stand.
one day you'll wake up, look around and say to yourself "do I own all this shit, or does it own me?"

 

Guitars are like girlfriends.
You really need to have a date with them to find out if you love them

 

I'd up the budget a little and buy used. Most of the cost in a cheap new guitar is dealer profit and VAT.

What hit you so that you got the idea to play guitar? What song, musician, genre inspired you? Get one of the guitars that makes the song/sound you like most. First try to get this guitar from Harkey Benton. Do not even look at Fender/Squier or Gibson/Epiphone or PRS or similar, it's all snake oil. (Hint: If someone mentions "tone wood" flee the place as quick as possible. Do that also when people mention Fender or Gibson more than one time and do not dismiss these guitars. Fender and Gibson guitars are con material.) Maybe Ibanez or Yamaha (not really cheap). In the end: if you nailed the kind of guitar you want/need down, look at Harley Benton. Fantastic Les Paul type and Stratocaster/Telecaster style guitars for around 150.- €. For Example. Look up videos on youtube, where they present "cheap" guitars from Amazon, Temu and Wish (which I wouldn't buy a guitar from, but that's another story ...) so you get an idea, what this whole snakeoil ridden field "electric guitars" is about.

Stick to Thomann and Harley Benton.

 

Don't buy a €300 guitar. In a couple of months you will regret it.

Most of the advice is pretty good, and i´ll second the ones about a Harley Benton, i got a single cut (can remember the series), and it came with push/pull knobs, so you get the humbuckers, but also can experiment with single coils, which is different than buying the single coil squier fender replicas some guys have mentioned, you wont be able to play a lot of stuff if you want to stick to genres which use high gain tones. Also, in my experience at least, its easier to start with a gibson scaled guitar, some things like bendings or that kind of stuff are easier to pull in that scale than in the fender scale.

I think it was the tension of the strings, the shape and high of the frets, the action, the nut, the quality of the bridge.....

 

If you can, go to some stores, play $500 ‐ $600 guitars and then find the one that you resonate with and buy it used for $300. This way if you wish to step up in quality later on or if you decide that the guitar isn't the instrument for you then you won't lose any money on the deal and can buy that concertina that you discovered moves your soul!

Or, if you just want to start learning and playing the guitar, you can start the old fashioned way, get a hand-me-down or a cheap used nylon string acoustic that stays in tune.

Then learn the basics, things like how to tune the bad boy and the fingerings, learn some simple sing along tunes and standard chords. If after a couple of months you still feel like carrying on with the guitar, then go for a decent electric (if that is indeed your plan), since for an electric you'll also need all kinds of additional peripherals, like amps, cables, picks... if you then find out that the guitar is not your thing, then just pass the guitar along, no harm done.

But if you do carry on, then you have a solid founding and it's less frustrating doing it.
