It is a consistency and evenness in playing and can be easily seen in the waveform because it has no spikes , except on hits where the music itself requires it. A compressor is still needed for overall evenness but it does not need to to squash, surge, pump or be heard to be effective in a lot of music. if this was untrue, nobody would have made the statement "it is transparent".
