(Discussion) looks dictate how far you get into the music industry

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by KUSHSMOKERLIT, Feb 11, 2024.

  1. :D first person i thought of when reading.

in recent years looks are very important in pop because the music has been so weak. But it seems pop music is finally improving. Everything becomes a trend, even being shit.

Gwar and Madonna would like a word. I'll leave it to you to decide which is which.

Beauty, good looks, and attractiveness are all subjective... and I think regardless of your chosen profession or past-time, a little talent can go a long way. I mean just look at Ed Sheeran or Post Malone for example

    Utter bollocks.

It may have a small effect on highly commercial kiddy-pop, and always has, but it does also require talent. You're just as likely to be noticed by your haircut and the clothes you wear as having an outstandingly pretty face.

Where are all these supermodels in pop music by the way? Most artists seem pretty average looking to me. I'd even go as far as saying that some of the current big name artists are pretty damn ugly. Of course if you're massively overweight, unhealthy looking, dress like a bag of rags and look like you've not had a wash for a month then that ain't gonna have much appeal to anyone, but most adults really don't give a fuck what you look like if they enjoy your music.

I've seen these kind of narrow arguments presented here before which wholesale ignore huge areas of the music industry - looks have no bearing whatsoever on success in classical, jazz, metal, soundtrack composition or the whole range of electronic dance music styles out there.

And even then, that isn't a barrier to becoming successful. Here's a selection of larger brethren and sisthren who've done pretty well for themsleves.

Anyone can be a musician no matter the looks.

Does it matter to audiences? Definitely..

Sadly we humans tend to act more favourably towards better looking people, and many idiots out there only pay attention to artists that look good.
In the end it does matter for the audiences and managers. The better looking an artist the better the product becomes....

    But.....
A musician who knows his stuff can't be stopped though.... :metal:

thank you all for commenting on this thread we can agree beauty does affect your success on genres like pop music but it doesn't on genres like metal , jazz and electronic music so i guess there's still hope for those of us that don't look that good hell no offense but look at seamless dude is mental at making electronic music and he doesn't fit the standart of pretty guy although that said he looks much better nowadays he has lost a lot of weight and looks better overall

It's about being marketable and mediagenic. Why do white guys in bands look alike? "Rock the look; look the rock." A hot chick will get signed before a plain chick will. If one isn't attractive, there's marketing mythos to augment the artist's image.

I know one musician of whom it's been said that "All he has to do is be good-looking and sound like Beck." He does more than that, but that much is nevertheless true. He's done modeling; that promotes his musical career. Whatever. He's a nice guy.

I myself never associate images of myself with my music. I consider what's on the outside from what comes from the inside. I'll never be "successful," but people who hear my music aren't having their perception of it influenced by their response to how I look.

Mama's pretty boy ain't he?

When you say "looks is important", I agree - it is, but you don't have to look like a Barbie or Ken doll to be a successful musician. Something called "charisma" plays a big role in how people perceive you - how "beautiful" you are. You can also look grotesque like Brian Warner (M.Manson), or David Bowie, and draw attention. However, even though it IS important, it's only a part of the story. You do need talent, relentlessness, network of acquaintances, being social... and some luck.

btw. Madonna didn't look like Dr. Frankenstein's experiment gone wrong at the start of her career.

You ask about the 'music industry' in your title. The 'music industry' isn't just hopping around on stage wearing skimpy outfits and seeing your face in the yellow press. Many composers, sound designers, engineers, producers remain faceless all their lives. Many people working those jobs started as musicians, often with decent success, but transitioned into another role for one reason or another.

Definition of princess: Life function is to be the receptacle for the honorable noble sperm to produce more Willies and Georgies. Synonyms: breeding appliance. Use in a sentence by a Monarch: ... just close your eyes, open your legs and think of England.

If your life function in life is to be the receptacle for sperm to produce more Willies and Georgies and nothing else, your looks might be important to the live sperm donor.

If I was still on the prowl and of that age, I for one would pass on that wafer until 10 minutes to last call. Looks is a subjective thing stop blaming the world for your suck, maybe its just you.
