i've been buying physical copies of magazines, so I'll have something to read when the power grid fails. so far I have half of the 1920's National geographics and 1/2 of the 1930's.

its remarkable to see what Turkey was like before it was westernized.also remarkable to see the changes in printing technologies when they finally developed color printing (but only for important photographs). Just the ads alone are worth the physical space they take up.

so yeah the digital trash will take itself out when the grid fails, in the meantime backup what you love and don't store it in the cloud. cause the cloud will fail first.

actually all that crap will disappear in a century or two, some of the chemicals might take a few centuries more, but in a thousand years there won't be a trace left. There are no trash dumps from rome or greece or even the Incas. Rain, wind, bacteria a few tidal waves some earthquakes a couple of lightning bolts the odd asteroid or comet and the slate is wiped clean once again.

Better go with an optimistic estimate of 2030. That's how long this "civilization" has IMO. Archaeologists will tell you mostly stone tablets, some clay pots and broken sculptures survive the fire here and there. Large rocky masses entering the atmosphere create friction starting fires that can evaporate even stone buildings. "The Great Chicago Fire" is a good example:

So if you want your music or graphics to survive, better start carving your sheet music on tablets. Sign them: "Margaret" so the next modern civilization in two thousand years will know. :D

In 30 years, someone will still be asking if there is a cracked version of "Insert Plugin Here"

Thinking about the coming decades is no fun. Digital trash is completely fine. It doesn't pollute the air, water, soil, and blood. Maybe indirectly from all the electricity, nuclear, coal, and oil to keep the show running, but not directly.

The physical trash is most worrying. Not even talking about the particulate matter, or the nanoparticles...

So many things have been and continue to be thrown away that I would not be surprised in the future we start digging through the garbage to collect tech junk/other materials for making robots and goods. Our souls have been sold for money long before most of us were born.

     :goodpost:
