Can you think of any plugin that can slice a sample and also do the granular thing with the playhead? I want the per-note precision of a sample slice player, and the sound from granular synthesis, i.e. not putting a granular effect on afterwards.

I tried making ableton stock devices do it, but the only way you get good spray is if you manually slice each sample and load into a granular sampler in drum rack. The Sampler and Simpler devices can't do Spray well enough, it seems.

It can be done with Bitwig's sampler.

Interesting. So would it be that the grains are only being created based on the single slice you're triggering from the larger sample?

Not sure it is possible, you want a sampler of a sampler, grains in granular sampleres are slices too but you don't slice them manually.

Maybe Renoise's Redux plugin? It is basically the Renoise sampler and phrase player in a VST plugin. You should be able to have some kind of granular effect by cutting samples with the xS effect command. I tried to do it before, but it wasn't that effective. But doable if you want to dive a little deeper and adjust it.
So you can slice the sample, play the sliced item and then have the xS command play that item in different places. I couldn't really grasp if this what you want but it seems close.

Mimic instrument from Reason Studios. You can slice any sample and also apply granular playback for every single slice. The bad thing is that the granular parameters are just a few compared to its own full Granular instrument
