It's FL Studio 21.2.2.xxxx. Same behaviour in Ableton Live 11.3.13. Both legit.
    Any idea? :dunno:

this could be a g-sync indicator. I don't know how to disable that though, nor why would it suddenly appear on its own

YES! Thank you very much. Somehow that had gotten turned on in the Nvidia settings. Disabled it and rebooted and now it's gone. Thank you very much, that was driving me crazy.

AH! I just had this issue pop up and couldn't figure out what it was, but that did the trick. For you future people, it's in System Settings -> Nvidia Settings -> OpenGL Settings, then uncheck the box next to Enable G-SYNC/G-SYNC Compatible Visual Indicator. Close an re-open any affected programs to see the change.

So are you saying that you see an overlay of the word "NORMAL" in both FL Studio and Ableton Live?

What @stopped says is interesting, especially if the font is the same across plugins and DAWs.
A graphics option seems a great place to start, but if it only happens (you only ever see that word "NORMAL" with DAWs / plugins GUIs that seems kind of weird, too.

vst plugins seem to be one of the last holdouts of openGL graphics so it does make some sense
