I've downloaded just about every synth on the 'sister site', and written (not very good) songs with most of them. I spent most of my 'music' time just going through presets and noodling, never writing any music at all, and then downloading newer VST synths and playing with their presets. Then I'd download collections of presets, so that I had 50,000 for many of my synths, and waste time listening to those presets, instead of actually writing music.
Then I reinstalled Dune 3, which I had installed a few years ago, and then uninstalled for some reason. Then I tried Dune 3's 'Genetics' feature, and suddenly I was able to make usable new presets out of two or three existing presets, with zero effort. In an hour I had made over 100 fantastic pads, brand new, zero effort, and I thought to myself: why do I need all these other synths, when I know they can't make a bass, pad, lead, pluck, etc. that's any better than what I can do with Dune 3? So I'm going to uninstall a load of my synth VSTs. Sylenth1 is going for a start.

Has anybody else done the same thing?
This is what is currently in my VST folder:

The same thing happens to me, I need to reduce the number of plugins to use. I have less and less time and I can't keep trying it and trying it. In the end, it is better to know what a plugin sounds like than to have 20 and not know them.
But, I also have moments where I like to experiment and I like to try new things and investigate.
So there they are... How do I have them installed?
I have in folders by categories, and in the root.

    \SYNTH
the ones I use the most
    \SYNTH\BANK B
    others

    \DELAY
only 3 or 4.... the ones I use the most.
    \DELAY\BANK B
    others

If I'm going to make music I'm going to root, if I want to waste time I'm going to BANK B
This way there is no folder and 30 reverbs come out... or 40 compressors.

There’s no point in hoarding plug-ins, IMO. I’ve decided to limit myself to the full sets from Arturia, Korg and Roland, as well as a few UVI sets. The Jupiter-X is also one of my best purchases (even though I know it’s technically Zenology with keys). There’s literally tons you can do with it, and you’re away from your computer. Of course I have other hw synths and drum machines as well.

FX and mix/master plug-ins are a bit different. Those you can never have too many :D

In terms of presets, I try to only use them with digital synths and ROMplers. For subtractive stuff I try to program from scratch.

One great lesson I learned in university (college) is to do the writing elsewhere - only then move back to the front of your computer. Whether it’s on a hardware synth or workstation, a groovebox or a piano with some pen & paper - doesn’t matter. This is also why ”dawless” is so appealing to a lot of new people.

I have about 1000 vsts, its a really bad thing to gather them all unless you have some way of categorizing them and searching those categories. Even after categorizing its a bad thing to have too many vsts.

I use streamdeck xl, i made every plugin use an autohotkey script that points to one master script file. That script contains a way of adding the plugin in bitwig (i can change it to recognize what daw is currently on). The master script uses the name that the slave scripts have so it knows what plugin to add

But im going to get rid off most of them , or organize them somewhere hidden

Now im in process of making kontakt libraries to be launchable from streamdeck , but that seems timewaste since most of them dont have nicnt and will propably change location at some point

Also of course iam keeping the installation files of all the vsts too

you have a lot of junk. I can tell that from these few right off the bat. i'll make a list of what I would delete. You can get off to a good start and sh.tcan these:

Plug and Mix 27/11/2022 20:16:43 File folder
Plug and Mix Chainer 23/04/2023 21:20:05 File folder
Plug and Mix Pro 23/04/2023 21:41:37 File folder

I would stick all of this in another folder and move it somewhere so that it doesn't load any of it unless you put it back on purpose. Many of the "good ones" are actually duplicates. you have newer versions which are backwards compatible so you do not need every version. Some you keep thinking you may use them, but you won't.

Clone's advice of moving the VSTs to another folder, rather than uninstalling makes good sense -then set a reminder down the track so you can uninstall the ones you didn't use.

My general rule is if I find anything frustrating/annoying, I generally uninstall it. Likewise if you don't find it inspiring to use or if the sounds can easily be made with another VST which has a better interface.

That said, I still have too many VSTs (the essential 80 VSTis I absolutely cannot do without LOL)

Why do people hoard so many vsts ? either because they are probably not very good at producing music or just like playing with them! Stock plugins are all you need today! if you are anygood at your trade.:winker:

That is my basic list, i have them favourited in Ableton's Browser, so that i have them ready to go.
It looks like a lot, but most of the plugins, i either own or are for a special reason still installed.
I tend to be very careful with adding new plugins or trying new ones out.

    Synths:
Albino, there are easy to go pad i love.
    Discovery pro
    Sylenth1 v2 and v3, but only use v2
    Diva
    Repro-5
    Zebra
    Hive 1
    Serum
    Osirus (Virus C emu)
    OsTirus (Virus Ti emu)
Massive (Still miles better than the new version and i can still get great sounds out of it, idk why people stopped using it. If only NI would create a bigger GUI for it, then it would be future proof.)
    Phoscyon 2
    Vavra (Waldorf MicroQ emu)
    Polysix
Korg M1 (those patches are absolute classics and if you tweak them a bit, it just sounds awsome.)
Roland XV5080, one of the best Roland Cloud plugins for me, easy to go synths.
    V-station (just a killer synth ...)
    Spire

Kontakt 5,6,7, i prefer v5. Is the only Sampler i use which has a timestretching, i wish Ableton Sampler would have timestretching, this would be a game changer for me and i would stop using
Omnisphere without Sonic Expansions, but with Trillian Library.
Alchemy (Factory and only 3 Expansions) - I still has very unique Pads, which i really like to use.
Nexus 4 ROMs only, the ROM from version 2 has some presets, i still love to use.

Addictive Drums (been using it for ages and it just works for acoustic drums for me.)
Addictive Keys (easy, good sounding and small Piano Library with a great GUI, its perfect for me.)

    FX:
    Whole Fabfilter bundle
    Whole D16 Bundle
    Whole ValhallaBundle
    LFO Tool
VolumeShaper 4 - forget the new ShaperBox, this plugin is all need.
    Korg
    AAR
Wave Arts MasterVerb 5 (last version with VST2 support and i like the Gate before the Reverb.
Sonalksis Creative Filter Stereo ( old filter plugin, i am using for so long and its fine for me and if i need more control than Autofilter by Ableton offers!)

Sound Design FX Plugins, only use them, if i really want to Sound Design something.
    Eventide Bundle
    GRM Bundle
    SoundToys Bundle

    Tools:
VSTNotepad, to add notes on master about the song idea, i wish Ableton had this build in.

You need to sort them better:
Give the folder a clear name!
For example you have DiscoDSP as folder, what is in there?

I also see a lot of old plugins like TERA3, i did use that 18 years ago ...

Well open the plugins one by one and decide if you want to use it or if i can be use for anything in your workflow, i not move to another folder or simply delete.
(i suggest keeping a backup of the packed releases somewhere on an external HDD, if you really need or want it in the future again)

Ableton has very bad synth stock, i tried very long to get along with them, its simply easier for me to use Sylenth1 or something.

on the FX stock plugins i agree, i use them a lot and i did miss as i had to use another DAW.

Really? I always found the Ableton synths to be decent at the very least.

First, do that extra folder trick/suggestion above (it works! - just go adding to your main folder what you really use or miss a lot. What you never use, you can delete later on).
Stock fx usually will do the job for basic fx (reverbs, delays, etc).
Then add some free ones just for smth a little different (TDR, VOS free stuff, for instance).
Free synths will do the job too, in most cases (Vital, Surge, Tyrell, Synth1,Dexed). You will have wavetable, subtractive and basic FM covered.
For basic workstation sounds, Xpand!2 and Korg M1 (you won't need anything else).

I have lots of things installed cause I like to listen to presets to get inspiration to make my own sounds, but when it comes to producing, I use almost just stock or free plugins, and a bunch of the same vsts I use over and over again (Tyrell, Synth1, Vital).

I guess it's an addiction for me, as after I installed all my purchased plugins and instruments plus the few utilities that I use I promised myself that I would focus on creating and not collecting. I failed at the collection bit...but...it has become much, much easier to nuke everything that I have auditioned so I'm not all clogged up and squabbling with the angel on one shoulder and the demon on the other in deciding what to use in any given situation. I've been doing the audio processing and songwriting thing long enough to know what works for me and diss that which doesn't. Now the only "extended trial versions" that are on my computer that I have as go to tools are the ones that I'd buy right away but that have invasive protection that I don't cotton to...which aren't many.

Ableton Simpler has different Warp Modes, which can be used for time-stretching samples!

i know, but i never got it well to work like the one included in Kontakt. This is very visible when working with vocal samples.
I think Bitwig has timestretching in their sampler device.
