I've been exploring speakers lately. I wrote (to my taste) a banger of a hardcore track (like in punk hardcore, but not punk at all, but not metal either, I don't know at this point), and I decided to do a little experiment with it and ToneX.

You can judge the music itself, even the mix if you want, but it's not the point of this thread. I know my genre is very simple, and I still have a lot to learn to sound "professional", no need to remind me
Oh, and my playing is sloppy on this one, I recorded quickly when I had a little time to make noise, please forgive me. I could only mix with headphones for this matter. And my strings are 1 year old lmao

Anyway, I used 3 different ToneX profiles for this, each one with another speaker, but for now I won't tell what they are. A lot of people feel bad about the V30 being everywhere, so I gave other speakers a shot. I selected the best sounding (or least bad sounding) profiles corresponding to the speakers I selected, tweaked them if needed to balance them, and there we go.

What I'd like you to do (taking 2mn if just following what's below, or 5mn if you like the song :D) :
- No need to go past 10s, please listen to 1 then 2 then 3 without going back
- Rank the 3 samples
- Listen again, rank again. If the result is different from your first approach, let me know ! (a theory I'd like to test)
- If you're willing to, guess the speakers :D
- If a tone is a no-go, tell me as well

I'll let some time pass, then I'll reveal the speakers used (as well as the profiles for ToneX users) and the theory I'm testing. I hope to have some feedback !

 

Trying different cabs is annoying AF, right? In your example my order would be 2, 1, 3 with differently reduced phase issues. The (main) problem is, this is a matter of taste, there's no objective right or wrong.

 

Oh you have no idea, my OG mix is one of them and I tried to kind of match the balance with other speakers without touching anything on drums and bass. Nightmare ! Thanks for the feedback, and I must say very interesting result !!! Did you listen again and change your order ?

No. I find 3 unpleasing, to be friendly and 1 too hollow.

 

There's a six hour video on YT comparing all the Celestion speakers in a Zilla Fatbaby. I found it very useful. Of course you can just skip to the head to head comparisons starting at 2h28m

 

I liked the first the best.

 

What i personally noticed that all version are a bit honky, try taking out some of the 3k and post again please.

2,1,3. 2 in the top spot, but I think after multiple listens my ranking of the other two might switch up a little.

 

I like #3 because I can hear the kick and snare attack better.
I would like to hear #2 with reduced treble or #3 with more controlled bass.
