    Hi guys

First post but much respect to the audiosex community. This along with audioz are my first stops everytime I log on and the best kept secrets on the net if you ask me.

I've got a problem with my macbook and it's getting to the point where it's affecting my ability to produce anything. I have a mid 2012 Macbook Pro and it's loaded with software from audioz. I upped the ram to 16gb and actually replaced the hard drive so that it has a 1TB samsung HD as well as a 2TB Western Digital Green HD under the hood.

I'm not sure what it is but something is resetting the MBP on a pretty much daily basis now. This has been ongoing for a couple of months and I tried to ask people I knew and look for a solution but the resetting is becoming much more frequent and I'm wondering if it's because of something that I installed that hopefully I might just be able to delete and see it stable again. I only have music production software on the MBP.

It seems to happen randomly where I'll just look up and the screen goes still and I can't move the cursor and then I hear the dreaded click and it resets. Although it's starting to behave weirdly now and doing things such as the screen may flash white as if it is about to reset but it continues as normal after a few seconds. I have a 27" AOC monitor hooked up to it via Displayport and two USB hubs. As I upgraded everything at the same time I'm not sure exactly what is causing the issue.

I have accumulated a fair amount of crash reports but have found that it's not straightforward to diagnose these as I've yet to find a good guide to understand the newer style of reports. If anyone could help me to read these or point me in the direction of somewhere that I may be able to get help then I would be extremely grateful. It makes it hard to work when I've just laid something down and right in the middle of it the MBP crashes out of nowhere. Here is the last crash that happened just a short while ago if anyone can see what the issue is:

If I can't find a solution then I'm thinking of wiping everything and installing from scratch and seeing if I can spot what's at fault. Hopefully if there is something sticking out that anybody can see that I can try and configure then it would save a lot of potential headache. Worst comes to worst I might have to strip everything out and put the stock components in to send off to apple, although I don't know if the problem is in the newly bought components. I did do a RAM test and it didn't come back with anything.

It actually reset twice in short succession for the first time so it seems to be getting more unstable which is why I'm now not delaying getting it seen to.

Please pardon me if I started this thread in the wrong place. I have more reports if anyone needs to see them going back to spot a pattern. I would be very grateful to all who may be able to help get me back to producing without any of these issues again.

N.B - The MBP actually crashed while I was writing this the first time so there is a new report that I have saved. That is actually the third crash in a matter of hours. I showed the copy of a report to someone a few weeks ago who said that the problem may be Little Snitch, although that is a legit and paid for version.

    Hi,

I'm not a Mac expert, but my first guess is either overheating or the computer can't cope with processing. Is there a way for you to track your drives' and system temperature? there are several products that do this. If you do wipe everything, install software one at a time, and test hard. There is software called "stress test" that you can use to run your computer resources really hard so you can see what the computer can take. It also reports what is struggling and what fails. The logs are usually created in real time, do even if the computer crashes, you can restart it and find the log and see what was the last component to run.

Again, I'm not a Mac expert (if anything, I avoid them completely!) but I am pretty sure you can get a Mac stress tester somewhere.

A friend of mine had a similar problem with a Mac, and it was simply overheating when the computer was crunching too hard. A laptop cooler pad and he never had the problem again.

    One of these:

    Anyway, good luck!

Are you able to run the mac in safe mode with no errors? if you can and there are no resets, then its likely a driver at fault, graphic drivers on windows puters are pretty good at creating havoc with the operating system. Did you update any software just before the errors started? A build-up of heat will also cause errors/resets, check the fan's airvents are not blocked up with dust, old sandwich, cake crumbs, abandoned crisps packet, dead mouse, etc

Well, if your mac has been used in some dusty places, there's maybe too much dust on the fan and it's overheating (like previous guys say). Mine was running hot a lot for a while because of that. Then, I just open it up and carefully clean the fan with an old toothbrush. It was night and day and fixed in 10-15min and all I needed was a screwdriver and the toothbrush. So it can't hurt to clean it to see if it will resolve your issue. Best case scenario, it will fix it. Worst case scenario, it won't solve your issue, but at least your computer will be clean and won't overheat in the next coming months. In any case, it's worth to try!

    My 2 cents

Buy a can of air & blast any dust out 1st.
Then boot from osx disc or a clean instal on a firewired hd of your current OS & then try previous version & leave it for an hour or 4.

See if there's a crash to determine its your OS or hardware.

(I'm so happy I moved away from apple - pc hardware and never going back.)

Make sure everything is good under the hood. Sometimes people don't connect wires properly when replacing drives causing heat sensors to not work properly. I would just wipe the drive and start over...reinstalling the OS. Remember it is best to use faster drives for audio/video production (7,200rpm+) I also try to keep at least 25% of my drive free.

You should try and go to spotlight settings.
Then under the privacy tab add your whole hard drive. That will prevent spotlight from scanning.
Then see if it continues. It may be a spotlight issue. I had the same thing happen until I found out what it was.

You can take your Macbook to the next Apple Store. Whether you are using cracked software or not, most Apple employees don't care about that
and will still help you out. Especially, when your problems are hardware related. If they are indeed software related, the best solution probably
is to perform a clean install. Hopefully you've made backups of all the AudioZ tools.

May I ask you what exactly was the cause for your crashes? Because I just can't (or don't want to) believe that any spotlight issue
would cause a Mac to crash. Back in the days I had Spotlight randomly crash my Pro Tools sessions, until I found out that
it had to be deactivated when using Pro Tools. But that was a Pro Tools issue.

Nowadays, I use EasyFind. It's better anyway. (plus I'm on Logic X, now)

Wow thanks for the response guys. Much respect for your input.

I am going to try everything that you say. I bought it second hand from new about six months in and it was relatively unused although I will clean out the fan as a first.

It didn't really occur to me that heat may be the issue but it makes a lot of sense considering that I took the optical drive out and replaced it with a 2tb hdd. Guess that's one issue with having an all metal body.

I have actually bought a multi purpose stand that I could use in different positions with a built in fan that looks like this:

I have no idea on how effective the cooling will be but I thought it useful as it's built into the stand. It's from a company called Lavolta that I've never heard of but it had good reviews on amazon. If I need to buy a cooling pad however then I won't hesitate to pick one up immediately.

The first thing I did was to download a temperature app which told me that the upper limit for temperature on each core was 105degC and with just running Logic and chrome and having a few finder windows open all four cores were slowly creeping up into the mid 80s so I will keep an eye on that now.

I guess I'll start by clearing out the fans and then checking the components and wires were fitted correctly and then running in safe mode and then running the suggested apps and look to reinstall the OS.

One of the reasons that I can't take it back to apple just yet is that I did just purchase Applecare but when I removed the optical drive and replaced it with a 1TB hard drive one of the screw heads became stripped when I screwed it back in with a precision screwdriver so that it won't grip and I can't take it out. It's a pain as I heard that apple could void the warranty if it looks like I've been tampering with the internals. That's another problem I have. Was thinking of buying a precision screwdriver and supergluing the tip of it into the stripped screw and letting it dry and trying to remove it that way. Or I'll need a very fine drill bit, as well as trying to get some official apple screws so they can't tell I removed it. Not an ideal situation but I'm hoping that I won't have to use apple at this rate. When it rains it pours right.

I'm gonna get to work to fix this thing. Maybe I'm pushing it a little too hard.

Thank all of you for your help. If anyone has anymore suggestions or notices something in the code then please do share your thoughts as I'm willing to try what it takes to stop this thing resetting mid project again.

Much love to the audioz community

Hey mate. Two things that pop out to me: the larger drives you put in and the temperature you're getting. If the S.M.A.R.T. HDD history is telling you that it's creeping to over 80°C, in my opinion that's super hot. My laptop has a 250gb drive for system, os and software and, like you, I replaced the optical drive with a caddy, with a 160gb drive for output files. The difference is that I used SSD instead of HDD, so the over-heating never happens.

I'd be interested to see what improvements you find with the cooling pad.

    Best of luck.
