so apple decided to drop firewire . the new logic update wont work with monterey and older os and ventura doesnt see firewire ports ... is there a fix ? i have a beautiful orpheus prism sound which sounds amazing !!!
what are my options here ?
    1. hacking os -
I have found a post online where someone managed to hack ventura and got the firewire to work ... but some say its not 100% stable . i think you need to disable some security options ... how safe is that ? what could go wrong ?

    2. use another soundcard to bridge the oprheus via adat ... any suggestions on models ?
i guess there will be added latency ... how much ?

    3. sell the orpheus and buy something with usb ... any suggestions ? i have an apollo twin (not the latest version , the one before) but the quality of the converters is quite below the orpheus

    4. yes of course there is the option of staying with logic 10.7 but thats not really what we are talking about here

looking forward to hearing your thoughts
    thanks!!

if you have TB3 you can get an FW to TB2 adapter and an TB2 to 3 adapter.
    works perfectly fine

Run the 8 channels of the Orpheus into the Apollo Duo's ADAT in and test it out.

ADAT Latency is negligible, it is basically the latency of the convertors themselves + the ASICS in the light-pipe so sub millisecond range.

Clocking could be an issue, but there are too many factors at play, it's best to just test and with quality gear on both sides it's likely to NOT be a problem. The Apollo Duo doesn't have a WC I/O.

You could just run a F/W to TB as @dondada stated above that would add the same latency as the ADAT from source to driver.

All this assumes no DSP before the driver.

As an aside - sooner or later the control panel to the Prism will no longer run on your device as I doubt Prism is going to write an update for compatibility. I also don't recall what kind of AES functionality is on the Orpheus but if has capable AES you could just use those outputs as well.

The Apollo DUO I think only has an ADAT in, so you will not be able to use the outputs on your Orpheus unless you upgrade to a unit with 2way ADAT or the max sample rate unless you update to unit with more than one ADAT i.o.

His post helps, if you don't just outright ignore what it is saying. He is telling you that using a mac Thunderbolt 3 to Firewire adapter, it will not cause significant additional latency. By converting the connection to a thunderbolt 3 using an adapter outside of the box, your mac will not even "know" that it is communicating with a Firewire device. I'm not sure the software for the interface will agree with that; but latency shouldn't be an issue if that will work.

Personally, I would leave the machine alone at the last working OS/Logic version. I might consider buying a Mac Mini with an ethernet port, and connecting them via Audiogridder or VSL and putting them also on the same wireless network.

On the PC side there is no difference in Latency via the TB3 port and the old Texas instrument Fire wire card I had installed.
