Good point. You could say that about u-he synths in general. Unlike the other popular synths out there, u-he synths usually don't get flooded with mediocre, generic "EDM" packs. u-he synths mostly get presets from talented sound designers for a variety of genres that utilize each synth's unique feature set.

:woot:that looks like a nightmare to me .

but im really happy people enjoy the same. Im not really there yet, if ever. im all about composition, arrangement etc not that much inventing own sounds, just making things as simple as possible for me

Many producers I know separate sound design from composition. Like, one session for just making sounds, resampling them etc. to use later on in compositions. Think of it as creating your own sample packs.

    Me?
I just turn knobs until my wife stabs me in the eye.

Do u-he synths have Richard Devine presets?

God, that guy can make ANY plugin sound the same. Glitchy grains raping spectral smears.
I'm not dissing him, but jeez dude.

I don't, but open any given plugin and you'll find it right under Simon Stockhausen's "toenail clipping into whale mating song pad" presets.

I can replicate this sound in the Wavestate Native in at least three and a half hours at a third of the CPU.

This is a really good way to waste time making lots of sounds that will never get used. Since sounds like that are made with no context or relationship to your track, even when you do finally use them; you will still have to do the work again just to make it fit. It's duplicate work. Kind of like how people used to convert gigs of samples into REX format to "use later", and then use less than 1% of them.

Making sounds is never a waste of time. And this process is used by at least two successful producers I've personally talked to. To each their own I guess.

Personally I have made the jump with a modal cobalt 8 and a subsequent 37 .. and I am in another world .. and I would never say again that the software have the same sound... it's day and night.. I only miss a korg modwave and with my elektron bars I would no longer need to touch a plugin.. diva never convinced me at the bass level and now that I have real synths I know why ..

Anyone who's seen The ill.Methodology will recognize these as day time and night time sessions.
Those who rely on music as their income can't just wait around for inspiration, as it's often not there.

The advantage of working this way is when you do sit down to actually create music you don't get bogged down tweaking sounds or searching for samples. Knowing you have a fresh palette of sounds to work with can make you more likely to want to create.

It's easier to convince yourself to spend some time playing around with new plugins or design some sounds, rather than feel pressure to actually make music, but the new interesting sound or technique is often what ends up inspiring a song. The work (or in this case play), comes before the inspiration, not the other way around.

It's been a while since I watched the original 2011 workshop (highly recommended), but it looks like there's an update. Worth checking out.

How often do you make sample packs from your own hardware synths to use later, in your own projects?

Really not often .. because for me I prefer make preset and rework if I want to sit in my new song or project.. I sample very often my moog bass in my digitakt but for pad and lead drone I prefer make a sound I like save in preset and rework if it need.. the feel of sub37 is too hard to sample for me the result is very different each time I rework or I touch just a few knobs.. so you have a new sound very easily.. for the drums I have my drums made by analog rytm ( the most)and tr8-s and I resample only tr8-s in my digitakt because midi delay with Ableton so it’s not in sync easily than electron gear .. I choose only hardware with good integration with daw .. I have a model d and use a little for bass but no store and recall fonction for me is a waste of time so I don’t use anymore now I have other synth.. and for me I work faster I don’t need to search it’s ready when I put on .. if I use sample pack of my gear and work I have the feeling I make always the same music …

Thank you for explaining all this. Your setup is quite similar to mine, other than that I use Logic. The "midi delay" you are talking about is handled correctly in Logic using the External Instrument plugin. It is very nice because it automatically compensates for external hardware latency and sync is perfect. I never have to manually trim audio from my synths trying to fix the drift you can get with many channels of external hardware. It's why if I want to use pre-made samples, I will just download some. I see no time management benefit in filling up hard drives with samples i may or may not use, and will not know if they are useful until I put them into a project. Making synth presets is nicer approach to it for me. When you make a preset, you can use it again and again, and tweak it to fit your project better, play a new riff or chords and you are not locked into some static audio you rendered a month ago. You are free to make whatever changes you want right up until you commit to the part, the mix, any automation, effects, and render it into your project. Depending on the Moog and the parameter you would normally just use CC automation via Midi, you have to actually do the adjustments by hand, because the synth may only have implementation for certain parameters; or you just create automation on the audio after the fact with fx plugins.

All it can take is something that I hear while "sound designing" to inspire a song, be it playing a synth, guitar or any instrument, plugin effect or stomp box combination. Some say that the universe was created by a sound.

I agree totally, i think way to many people confuse their reality with other peoples

See, why "you" choose a way of producing has a lot to do with your personality and character type, meaning that for instance people who avoid multiple choices and "tweaking" are often (not always but often) people who have difficulties with focus and concentration.

And people who manage to produce and "tweak" have a higher ability to keep focus and concentration in spite of "tweaking" with thousand details.

This is as long as they actually do produce though.
Because if they only "tweak" that too is a sign of a lack of ability to focus ,simply a way to escape the musts of actually finishing projects.
