A simple sampler comparable to, say, eighties hardware samplers like AKAI S1000 or Roland S-50.

a looping function similar to the RC-505's capability. playtime is weird and is slow development if at all. performance looping on the fly would be amazing.

Will likely be a long pre-release cycle, but as most users know Reaper often drops major features/improvements in minor versions rather than sandbagging them for major releases.

I see lots of stuff potentially branching,
    many requested features being implemented,
so far no sign of major GUI overhaul though,
I hope Cockos won't rush half-broken final release, better take their time and give it maybe few more months no problem

i believe simplicity is one main plus of Reaper which makes it load faster and small. It still runs in win Xp. Chances are very little that they ll ever do that. But it ld be amazing if they manage to achieve that without compromising Xp.

There are 2 ways to implement this. 1. image files - which would increase the installation size by a multiple and load the ram. 2. code based graphics - which would increase the number of lines of code by a mutiple.

I don't know if you realize this, but GUI can make up 70-90% of a program's lines of code. In my last plugin, 85% of the code is GUI code - and the GUI is very basic. Add to that the huge amount of work that goes into concept, UX and bugfixing.

My prediction: Not going to happen.

as I see it, it's not really a problem of filesize or efficiency, but about backwards/forwards compatibility as @justsomerandomdude noted - using modern graphical APIs would probably break compatibility, and also break compatibility with Reaper's features and extensions too,
current default GUI is fine imo, no idea why many people seem to still hate it or obsess about it,
that said, there was a rather big change in Reaper's GUI when jumping to major release versions, so I'd expect it this time again too

on the other hand Musescore 4 was completely redesigned and it ended up well:

and no need IMHO. The beauty inside Reaper is sufficient. and it's fun to find new themes.

I think we are talking past each other. You seem to be referring to Reaper Themes. But most of the people refer with their criticism to two completely different points:
    1. UI Framework. While MacOS and also most Linux distros have a relatively up-to-date UI framework, Windows uses many UI frameworks. The oldest framework that is still used a lot in Windows, and has never really been updated, is from 1998. Reaper on Windows OS uses only this old win32 css stuff for generating the UI, which looks absolutely awful on modern operating systems and makes for a bad overview because of the weak separators. A big disadvantage is especially that it is not darkmode compatible. Cockos would have the option to use a more recent framework when installing on win10 or win11, but they blame Microsoft and wait for Microsoft to update the Windows 98 UI framework - which will most likely never happen. More likely, Microsoft will increasingly replace Windows 98 based UIs in Win11 or Win12. So Reaper users are stuck in 1998 until Justin and Schwa decide to implement a modern UI framework.
    2. JSFX GUI. Most of the included JSFX use only generic sliders and dropdowns. Many would like to see knobs. Personally, I think 15 knobs in a row is as cluttered as 15 sliders in a row. The only way to improve it would be to draw individual, code-based GUIs. And I think that's unrealistic because of the enormous amount of work involved.
