Can't go wrong with many of them these days - especially for rock, especially with all the plugins you can add - but I would start with EZ Bass (it's that solid).

If you want more (or better, depending on your taste and perspective), then Session Bassist Icon Bass and Prime Bass are excellent candidates for rock bass phrases and samples.

I took a quick survey of my projects of these past 4-5 years, and if I'm not using a live bassist (or doing it myself), looks like Scarbee's basses are my favorite. Truly stellar. You can pick from Jay-Bass (Jazz bass), MM (Music Man), and for rock, the Rickenbacker (for that early Rush sound, before Geddy switched to the Jazz bass).

All range from really good to stellar, so good luck.

ModoBass2 is nice if you want a reasonable sized plugin. Or EzBass. People still love Spectrasonics Trilian, but it's about a 40 gb hd commitment.

Best libs I used are Scarbee P.Bass and Rickenbacker, and they're Great..

Then came Modo Bass and it's what I've been using ever since

This is on the surface not too difficult to answer because the number of options are substantial. However, it is completely dependent on how much of the rock tracks are real people and what genre of rock you are doing. The more real people you have on the tracks, considering using a real bassist becomes more prevalent. Even if not it's never a bad idea.
The year your rock resides in will also determine it.

Go onto the sister site and type 'Bass Kontakt' in either sequence and you should find plenty to wade through. The EZBass and Scarbee are fine as mentioned, if you are no fussed whether they sound totally human or not. They're both decent representations.
The Ample Sound basses also seem to have one of the greatest variety of usable basses (and guitars) for a vst plugin if this is the way you wish to proceed.
