I think (but I could be wrong) it was considered a specialized high end tool for orchestral composers.
I see it in this convoluted way: think of Breitling company, it was basically specialized in custom aerospace and automotive chronographs, THEN watches became sought after items.

BTW I think we (or I) already mentioned Synful Orchestra in another thread (1 or 2 years ago), speaking of physmod instruments like Swam, Pianoteq, etc.

I was about to say this. But then listened demos and its sounds really good.

 

Yeah, I think I got carried away for a while 'cos this technology is simply amazing. I remember seeing university professors who dealt with technology (Linux, Pure Data, Csound) using Synful and that's when I discovered it. They said they didn't have the resources to invest in PCs/Hackintoshs/MACs, their expensive-heavy sample libraries and that Synful solved the problem for them. At that time, my professor had almost the entire orchestra on Synful. He said he needed to study the software for a year to come up with realistic results (it even looks like traditional sample libraries are for lazy people). Anyway, the big advantage is that you don't need to build super computers to run a symphony orchestra.
Really, In practical terms, sample libraries and Synful are diferent beasts. Anyway, having Synful available is already a great joy for the entire audio community.

I installed it and it sounds good. I'm not blown away, but I only dabbled for about half an hour. I guess it will take some time to fully realize its potential. The demos sound fantastic. I've got a roli seablock and I'll try to use it on synfull. Perhaps this will make a difference. Obviously extensive use of conrollers is the key.

 

It's a no brainer for me. I'll be using an old computer forever. Great to have and use. Also for the price. Lass 3" 359 euro. Synful: Free.

it's a whole level of realism

Muse Sounds however is sample based and it actually having decent sounds and complete instruments sadly it is half baked; legato is buggy, you can't fuse 2 articulations (eg. Sul Tasto with CS), and also CPU intensive.

Synful is exceptional to realism and expressivity in every instruments but the problem is there is no piccolo, you can emulate actually but often it will get hard.
or maybe just miss to see it.

 

I had demoed Synful years ago and thought it had potential but sounded artificial. I'll be interested in giving it a better workout.

I see it's 16-channel plugin, so, I can order 16 defferent instruments to 16 different tracks (like TTS 1 or Edirol Orchestral), right?
PS. Demos sound decent

 

I think one of the problem software like this probably is that the ease of use if it has a steep learning curve, whereas anyone with a 30gb kontakt library and presets can get killer results immediately. I listened to most of those demos and they are simply amazing for the package size, but it’s the creator making the demos, and a pretty damn clever techie guy too. Let’s be fair, if as @Mynock says it takes a Professor a year, that’s tough when most modern computers can swallow orchestral stuff if you render / freeze tracks and it’s instant. 18 years ago it was a different story!

Listening to the demos again, I feel like this is uncanny valley territory. Most of it sounds so good the minor artifacts are glaring. I hear weird attacks in places on the strings on a lot of Eric's demos and he invented the thing. And the string ensembles start to sound like a Mighty Wurlitzer (tm). The horns and winds seem pretty stellar. Can't wait to mess with it again. I suspect laying a couple solo instruments over a good sample library might be unbelievable.

This sounds really nice and can be very useful for non critical everyday use. For such a small plugin it packs a lot of sound.

 

I just started to test it, and I think it will be a looong way up.

First thing that I noticed is that ignores MIDI sustain CC 64 (I use it a lot in string ensemble for example), so a new way of playing must be carved, not an easy thing at all.
I roughly understood the main idea under the hood, but playing naturally will take long time I'm afraid.
