Years ago there was this orange cordial drink being sold in the UK. On hot days it stank of fish. Made me feel sick to be honest. It was only later I found out they used prawns to give it colour.. It's one of the many reasons I only drink water these days!

Yeah, there's a reason why the animal agricult doesn't want you to know how the sausage is made. It's all gross, all the time. Just don't let your kids know they crush up bugs to give that delicious red colour in their sweets, either! Yummy!

It is a gel. Gel consists of dried collagen. The collagen is obtained - among other things from other animals - from fish bladders. There are also vegetable gels, but first of all, they cannot be used in every product to the same extent as animal gels, and secondly, resources are simply wasted when fish bladders are thrown away instead of being used and potatoes that should actually be eaten are suddenly used for clarifying. And yes, clarifying liquids does make a difference. A visual difference - and usually a taste difference, too. Not because it tastes fishy, but because the suspended solids have been removed. You can like it - I sometimes drink cloudy drinks, too - but they taste better to me when clarified.

Well, as far as taste goes: brewers say different ("It takes away a lot of the flavour from the beer," Mr Bosworth said.) Looks unlike a gel, to me:

I'm not a chemist, but from what I can gather, the collagen breaks down into gelatin; may explain confusion. I had no idea that (bladder) beer was filtered through the delicious fish guts for as long as 6 weeks! Yum!

I don't care what some guy on the BBC says. The guy could also claim that a high lime content in drinking water is delicious. Well, I think it's yucky and soften it with sodium bicarbonate.

I only like suspended solids in orange juice - and sometimes apple juice - but not in beer. And in soups, I think it's gross.

BTW This is gel. Gel = short for gelatin.

Many cultures find eating bugs a perfectly normal part of life, they are nutritious, take less resources to farm, nothing wrong with it except you have to learn enough to understand that otherwise the red color could be something like synthetic Red 40, derived from petroleum and in my opinion only a goddamn fool would say id rather eat a petroleum derivative than a perfectly edible (disgusting looking) insect

Or you could do the modern hipster head-in-the-sand route of using some natural bio anti-insect beetroot red dye extract, and see that it takes a pound of it to color anything past pink and then all you can taste is beetroot or something.

The vegan who died obviously had some heavy eating disorder, only eating durian fruit like wtf!? Must have been hell to live near this woman who only ate fruit that stank like a rotting corpse.

And 20K sheeple thought her pictures grass & water soup bowls sprinkled with hay & berries was worth subscribing to on instagram, enabling her psychological disorder

Stupid people will think the article has ANYTHING to do with a vegan diet. It hasn't! It's about a very sick person who does not eat enough food at all. I have lived with a person who had anorexia. It's one of the most terrible diseases.. also for the family.

There are millions of vegans all around the world, some of them with traditions back thousands and thousands of years.

The ONLY vitamin that isn't received via non-meat/non-dairy/non-eggs today is B12. But B12 exists in the soil, it wasn't a problem historically since people didn't peel or cut out the outer things. They ate everything that could be eaten. It isn't a problem now either if you drink any type of pseudo-milk, since pretty much all the vegan products contains B12. Just like people have to eat Vitamin D on the nothern hemisphere if you are from Africa since the skin won't uptake enough with so little sun.

There are heavy weight body builders that are eating vegan food only. Not an issue if you eat a mix of different foods.

(im not a vegan, but I have several friends who are for their whole adult life.. and they are sure more fit and healthy than I am).

If you ONLY eat meat from the wild you will die from lack of fat and other vitamins. You CAN live on only eating fish though.

I remember one guy from the Alone show that almost died and had to be pulled from the show, because he only ate meat from hunting deer and such that contains almost no fat. You can't live on only low fat meat. You can not survive more than like 3-4 months if you only eat low-fat meats.

Why would anyone want to use poor, squished bugs for sth as irrelevant as a colour @Deuterium, when (plant) alternatives have existed for aeons? I mean, the thought of using something as vile as strawberries in sweets is an abhorrent idea, when bugs are so plentiful and delicious! =)

I have done a bit of research, and it seems that the chemical structure of collagen (not a gel afaik) does break down to gelatin. But the fish guts don't start off as "gel". I think you're being deliberately disingenuous, since "gel" sounds better than (reality) fish bladder. I'm far too used to ppl describing (eg) "cochineal" (squished bugs) or how sentient beings are "processed", rather than writhing in agony in gas chambers, or having their throats cut "humanely" in slaughterhouses.

Truth. The NY Post has evolved into a complete rag. The article that I saw as its death knell was a piece spotlighting the homeless problem—a problem that NY officials helped create—which was presented in a derogatory light to begin with, but then took a bizarre turn, subtly mocking those on the streets. By the end, you were meant to realize that the "homeless problem" was having to tolerate the homeless, as opposed to viewing the problem as human beings who weren't being helped out of a bad spot—but no one wants to read about people who've lost everything, become homeless, and have gotten stuck in that position with no way out, due in part to a poorly run city—that's too real.

I am not disingenuous at all. I call it gel because that's what it is. It doesn't matter if it's made from skin, bones or innards or what animal it's made from - at least not for this discussion. The important thing is the function - the gelling and binding. Every elementary school-aged child I know knows what gel is and has at least a rough idea of what it is made of. So if you didn't know until now, the fault is not mine. Quite apart from that, it is you who are being disingenuous. Either out of ignorance or ideological reasons.
    1. Fish bladders are not an ingredient in beer and therefore do not have to be labeled. Fish bladders do not release substances into the product, they gel and remove suspended substances from the product. And once that happened, the gel compound is removed.
    2. No brewery in the world filters the product for weeks. Depending on the product, this takes a few hours to a maximum of 2 days.
    3. Most brewers do not even use fish bladders (or gel in general) to clarify the product. Globally, only a few traditional breweries still do this. Most simply use celite. And not just since yesterday. BTW, celite is vegan.
If you don't believe me, I recommend an internship at a brewery for a reality check.

PS: I bet my ass that the clothes you wear or most of the things you use in your everyday life contain at least one component whose ingredients come from an animal without you being aware of it. :winker:

Ya, Let's ignore that the lady clearly is unwell and totally make it a political thing.

reminds me of school (all boys) when a demon would throw a £1 coin in the air and get pleasure out of us acting like hyenas, fighting for it.

Most chemists report isinglass as a solid / powder, from the articles I could find from 1966-present. You may be confused as gelatin is (also) used nowadays. But that's not "traditional" or "natural" enough for some brewers, previously mentioned. Isinglass remains (in small quantities) in beer, since the process is not perfect. I try to use science and reports, rather than describe fish guts (inaccurately and bizarrely) as "gel". It doesn't rly matter to me, it only matters to the poor fish.

It's pretty easy to buy vegan products, from the Fairphone, WVS and such. I just want to reduce suffering in the world, pretty simple when you have that as a mindset. Only real difficulty is buying jeans w/o a stupid leather patch!

Put your beliefs aside. This is not reality. No brewery dumps a bucket of dried fish bladders into the brew tank. Just like haribo doesn't throw a pork rind into the gummy bear mix. isinglass is a processed product that - just like other animal gels - is sold as thin flakes, paste or liquid. And everyone uses whatever is easiest to process for their purposes. In the case of beer, it is therefore usually liquid. And it is used, if it is used at all, because it is particularly acid-reactive compared to beef and pork gel and binds the yeast particularly quickly.

Aha. And glue, adhesive, binder and plasticizer are also 100% vegan? Is there any way to check that, or do you just have to take their word for it?

Well, (phones) it's avoiding the child slavery (Apple, Google et al) that is the immediate concern. But Fairphone doesn't use glue etcs, it's literally a feature (easy self-repairs, simple screws). The appeal to futility is a real surprise. We can only do what is possible to reduce suffering. I mean, I've prolly stepped on bugs but I try not to. If there's a choice to reduce suffering to sentient beings, why wouldn't you take it?

Nah, Haribo (mostly) just uses delicious pig bones and skin in their sweets (gelatine). And of course those crushed bugs for that lip-smacking red flavour, it makes all the difference.

As far as the silly "gel" whitewashing? Clever to use that "processed" spin, makes slivers of fish guts sound more palatable. I certainly did make an assumption; from reading that collagen is denatured into a liquid (gelatin) irreversibly, as part of the process. This is in all the literature I can find. Not unreasonable to think fish bladders are not a gel. Again, not a chemist. Also not paid to exploit sentient beings.

Hahaha I love it. The carnivore guy somehow doesn't consider if a group of cannibals makes us all meat eaters, groups of vegans makes us? What education? The other side speaks of not being killers because we don't have claws- and speaks of invention in the same sentence. Ships sailing past each other in the dark.

thank you all for helping pick my movie tonight, 2001 space oddysey

did I spell that on purpose or not? no seriously I'm asking

Guys, let's chill a little. We all have free will to eat whatever we want (and/or we can). It depends a lot on the type of experience that each one has with ourself and with the world. Imagine a planet with countless religions, cultures, habits, types of diseases, foods, etc. so there is no way we can all be the same. But we can lessen the animosities on both sides 'cos it leads nowhere (because of the unwillingness to learn, there are unquestionable certainties that lead to a festival of aggressions that end in the old "-my dick is bigger/better than yours"). Each one knows (or will learn) about the consequences that our habits carry (I started to be vegan and then vegetarian due to health problems, only to realize later that the fauna was "thankful" for adopting this habit that brought me many benefits). So, let's try to be more respectful of each other's choices. By "chance", today I came across this amazing article about the amazing Devin Townsend and vegetarianism:

When asked if he considers himself to be a vegetarian activist, Devin replied:

"No. In fact, I'm the opposite of that, I think. I find that people who are active about such things run the risk of preaching, and I have no religious interests whatsoever. I think that religion is incredibly cruel, and I think that my biggest problem with being vegetarian, usually, is other vegetarians. Because I find, a lot of times, humans in general are… life isn't easy for anybody, so a lot of people are doing what they can do in order to get by. And I think that when somebody actively tries to convince other people that what they're doing in their life is not as relevant as what they're doing in their life, it's in my mind very similar to religion — it's like, 'Because you're not like me, you're wrong.' (...)

It's like, when people have that agenda, it's very easy for the fallibility of them to be called into question. If somebody puts themselves out as a martyr or as a sort of religious, perfect human being, it's only a matter of time before somebody finds a YouTube video of them, like, jacking off in a toilet or something, you know what I mean?! It's like, we're humans, man — we're, like, simple creatures."

    https://blabbermouth.net/news/devin...em-with-being-vegetarian-is-other-vegetarians

Each of us follows our own journey, at our own pace, and undeniably, at some point, we will reach, at some level, what we could call our truth and/or consequence. In the meantime, let's try to keep our minds more open and tempers calmer.
