My roommate has a 5 year old daughter and I allow her in and even let her play my keyboard (M-Audio Axiom MK2)if she doesn't have sticky fingers. I think that children should be encouraged to play instruments. They should be exposed to music from a very young age. I would however watch them like a hawk just in case they break something. The Kanye Pic is great!

I've got a 4 year old boy and he's already wrecked a rather nice radio controlled car I recently bought for his birthday I was quite partial to.

Let him loose in my studio full of expensive vintage gear? :wow: *no*

Also he might not dig the old retro analog vibe:

No I always pick them off with my rifle before they even get that close. You know to discourage others from trying the same thing. You gotta be vigilant. *yes*

  9. Vigilant would be an understatement. They always want to touch the bass cone of the monitors and would pound the keyboard to dust given half a chance. My beautiful daughter is turning 10 and now has a better sense of care about precious tools, but her friends who are curious are not allowed in without my supervision. Within a year or so she will be allowed to record her songs by herself as kids these days seem to have a genetically built in ability for understanding technology. She still needs to pass "The Studio Test" before she can sail solo.

NO NO NO NO, its my room, its my toys, go play with your own (broken) toys :snuffy:

kids will always want to play, especially if it is something expensive, trick is buy them some cheap gear (second hand) so they can happily wreck that and not your classic/vintage stuff :mates:

Awesome! I let the kids noodle around learning different instruments/sounds on the midi controller. I may even get around to turning one of their "melodies" into a track at some point - albeit just for personal consumption!

Sometimes my answer is yes, sometimes is no.
But, because my studio is 85% computer related and kids want's to play and I want to keep my system clean.
Almost everyday my four year old son play on my midi controler, and play with me together when I test some new libraries or instruments.
Daughter is older, she go to musical school and she has own kurzweil piano.

Some time ago I scolded the kid for touching my equipment.. until that one day !

One day I was sleeping and heard his mom playing the drums... just a little kick n snare beat... I knew it was her because every note was exactly 1/4th notes... nothing fancy but at least she kept time good.

So.. I walk into the music room and almost freaked out!

It was not the mom... it was the damn 2 year old !

I was like WTF !!! HOW CAN HE KEEP TIME AT 2 YEARS OLD !!???

Thats when I decided to let him have some older crap in my closet like Roland SPD-6 drums, congas M-Audio keyrig25, etc...

MAIN music equipment is off limits... but... he gets my old gear vs letting it collect dust in the closet...

Now.. I got a Maschine studio a few months back.... but im still hesitant to give him the Maschine MK1 thou.... we will see... since hes age 4 now

Some kids absorb these things like sponges. Some don't. This particular one you speak of sounds like on of those sponges.

I have two daughters. One plays keyboards really well and now learning the guitar. The other one is only 3, so no instruments yet, but damn can she hold a note while singing those damn Disney tunes. I feel happy to know that they have been exposed to me making and listening to music. It's an awesome feeling seeing your offspring do this.

    Ahh hell no!

My gear is in the living room and when my nephews are expected over(ages 2 and 8), I cover it all with blankets to make it look boring.

I tried leaving it uncovered once.. could not keep them away from it the entire time they were here. I was a nervous wreck.. NEVER AGAIN!

    No!
I did it in the past and the result was: they go to the digital piano, trigger the drums presets and they smash the keys John Bonham style. Since then and the needed expensive repairs my studio is off limits. I shoot anybody on sight and then I ask questions. :snuffy:

    My little girl tonight :)

She loves EZ Drummer, and her favourite kits are Pop / Rock and Funkmaster Clyde (because it's pink!).

She's starting to learn to follow a 4/4 beat (will get better when she can reach the pedals).
