My Cubase 5 seems to be getting moody in its old age. Now, when I select various parts and move them in the arrangement window, not all of them comply. Some stay where they are, the lazy buggers. This is proving to be a bit of a nightmare for arranging. Any ideas as to why this is happening? Any cures? Thanks in advance!

Have you checked your quantize value. And how far are you trying to drag them. Ticks, beats or bars?

Chippy beat me to it. Yes, I would check the snap settings first and foremost and report back. :)

well, the parts shift to whatever value I have set - full bars, 16ths or whatever. The prts that move snap to position properly, but the issue is that when selecting several parts, as well as several tracks simultaneously, some get left behind. By which I mean, some of the selected parts stay exactly where they are, while the rest of the selected parts move to where they're supposed to.

I didn't use to have this problem, then it suddenly started to happen in very busy projects, in the advanced stages when there were tons of things going on. Now, it's just happened to me in a song which I've only just started to arrange...

At first I thought perhaps Cubase just couldn't handle the load and was messing up, now I'm beginning to suspect some specific plug in or combination of VSTs is affecting it.

I'm working on a PC, win XP, 32 bit. I read something about this once on the net, but now I can't seem to find anything at all about this particular problem.

You accidentally locked one/several tracks. Click the lock button again to unlock it.

I'm afraid that's not it. Certain parts within a track will move, others within the same track won't. Also, I can go back, select the parts that didn't move the first time and move them the second time round. :dunno:

I should clarify that I'm talking about moving big chunks of audio i.e. a whole verse for example, comprised of several bars with audio on maybe 20+ tracks and dragging it across several bars to make way for a new part.

Hmm. I never encountered that problem (I think). Been using Cubase since 1998 or so.
If you find the solution to the problem/bug, let me know.

Ok, weird - I seem to have fixed it - at least temporarily/partially by defragging the d drive. :dancing:

It wasn't in bad shape, but it took five hours for the fast program to run... I also did a little registry spring cleaning, disk checking etc while I was at it I removed a couple of programs I don't use.

So, not sure what did it or whether I've solved the problem. The song I just tried to rearrange successfully was only a few bars long, which is why I was surprised that I was having problems because in the past this only happened with huge, complicated tracks running loads of audio tracks with tons of small parts etc So the problem might persist with those kinds of projects, but it gives me a clue as to why this is happening.

thanks everyone for your input, if anyone has anything further to add I'd love to hear.

It is unlikely but possible that you froze your track and forgot about it. If not it sounds like a bug to me (not quantize, not locked).

Yes, definitely not a frozen track (in that case the whole track would not move). Seeing as defragmenting my drive has fixed the issue, at least for know, I guess it qualifies as some sort of bug, otherwise more people with big drives would be reporting this happening. Like I said, the drive wasn't even that badly fragmented...

arrrrrgh I thought my troubles were over. BUT - due to me messing around yesterday, cleaning up registry and defragging the d drive, today Cubase won't start up. At all. I double click, it initialises VSTs and things and then disappears. At first it looked like it was happening round about when it gets to midi device control, then, control room... I removed vst folder, same thing. I trashed preferences, same thing. Now, it seems to happen round about when it reaches content, whatever that is. :wow: what have I done!
