    Hello to all,
is there a way to add VST Fx to external instrument (moog) in Cubase?
I added an external instrument channel, i can record midi etc but when i add VST fx on inserts
the FX doesn't work..Also i created an FX channel and root the moog to this FX but that doesn't work too

    Any ideas?

    Thanx

Did you by any chance mix up MIDI and audio FX? Because if you add an audio FX like compressor or EQ to a MIDI track, well, that doesn't really work.

this could be easier to explain... the incoming audio is being bussed thru the effect, and then recorded.

    Other Ways To Apply Effects
Using effects as inserts on audio or Instrument tracks is the most common way of applying them but you can also use two other types of tracks — FX and Group tracks — to add effects. An FX track, also known as a send effect track, contains one or more effects and you can use the Send section of any other track to route audio through it. Group tracks also have this facility and both can be used to process several tracks through the same effect, say for example applying the same amount of compression to every track in a multitracked drum kit. You can add these and other tracks from the Project > Add Track menu.

i was trying to explain with less confusion. the audio incoming hits the channel fader before it reaches the Insert FX. So it has to be bussed through the insert FX by sending it, and then recorded Post-FX.

same thread, printing directly to the incoming audio:

Hi, you can insert the effect in the input-bus (which would lead to the effect being printed to your recordings - seldomly what one wants to achieve) or into an Audio track that the respective Input bus is routed to .

    All the best
    Ernst"

"(which would lead to the effect being printed to your recordings - seldomly what one wants to achieve)". This is usually the situation where someone actually asks this question.

i suspect that our friend has wrong connections with cable

you say that "you can play by midi the external instrument", but where are going the OUTPUT AUDIO CABLES OF THE MOOG? Into an INPUT OF YOUR AUDIO CARD or somewhere else...(for example in an hardware mixer then to the speakers...)

    the right connections are:
-audio output of the MOOG into the input of your audio card
-midi in-out on a midi interface (or whatever)

PS: which model moog is it? I dont think it has a usb connection with audio-midi going through there...

This could also be the classic case of what midi and midi signal actually is

The part I am addressing, is using a Send to another Audio Channel to "Print" the audio with the effect of the plugin onto the Waveform.

That guy's answer says "Seldom do you want this"; but that isn't accurate. Recording effects applied to an incoming signal before it is recorded is why so many musicians and vocalists use Audio Interfaces which run External DSP Effects on the input signal path. (like UAD). Many real-time musicians want the effect applied directly to what they are playing/singing because the effect can change the timing of what they play. And it's why 0 Latency is very important to them.

The first few times you set this up to record your hardware, it almost seems like you are using an extra audio track to do it. It's because of the signal flow of the channel strip. Reaper does have Input Effects, but I cannot seem to find it documented for Cubase.

With the Moog, if it is an Analog only synth, it will only respond to midi and CC information for the Pitch Wheel, Mod Wheel, and Keys. If you want other automation style sounds, you have to do them realtime. This just depends on the model of Moog you are using. Some have full CC implementation for all the digital parameters. It's also the only data sent/received via the USB Midi connection.
