It's not VU max. It's Peak.
VU ≠ Peak

Send a 1kHz sinus through the meter. Maybe that gives you clarity ;)

Nah, I find VU max is not necessary. The VU Meter has VU output recording and therefore the possibility to record the entire loudness history.

Stereo can also be recorded in 1 automation track when VU Meter is in SUMMED mode (L || R).

 

One thing is of interest for me: The dot on the record button is obviously not displayed on your operating system.
Instead it's a generic box. Is this box displayed in red when you press the button?

I'm not the guy who shifts the blame to others. But in this case, I'm 95% sure it's the OS. Are you sure the "black circle" with the Arial font is in your win 7 character map?

Yes, of course. Several, in fact. I could create a red filled circle that automatically adjusts its distance from the "rec" string and its radius to the font size of the "rec" string. But I would really like to avoid this way. That opens up a whole new can of worms... Or I could include high resolution png graphics with baked in elements and scale them based on the plugin window width. But this increases the package size...
Maybe there is a free ttf-font (with similar good readability properties as MS Arial) and wide palette of included symbols (like ≡ and ⚫). I'll have a look at it. If someone has a tip in this direction, please let me know.

That's called dotted circle (hidden under the pop-up) ◌, then comes black circle ●.

Well.... I still have the suspicion that it is related to the OS (or to the communication between Reaper and the OS).
I have tested the code on Win8.1, Win10 and Win11 without any problems. Some users with macOS and Linux seem to have difficulties in displaying some of the symbols used, while for other mac users the symbols are displayed without any problems.. And for you, as a Win7 user, the "black circle" is also not displayed on the GUI. I think my hypothesis- even if it does not have to be correct - is at least reasonable.
