I am lookin for a vst that makes some real left-field crazy soundin synths for my idm tracks. Like some Mouse On Mars/Autechture/Tycho type off stuff. The last synth I got that had a real crazy sound to it was Phonec. I've been plannin on making a bib for shits and gigs and I need some real outlandish synths to do it. I have all the big time synths like Sylenth, Massive, Synthmaster, Cronox3 and 4, Zeta, etc...but I can't really make the sounds I'm lookin for. Maybe im just using them incorrectly idk. What is the best vst for some extremely trippy sounds?

    Here's some good examples...

Check out the Oddity by GMedia, you'd like the sound. That QuikQuack one, Glass Viper or something.
The other usual suspects include Moog Modular, the TimeArp 2600. You can get a lot of trippy odd stuff out of those, if you make programming them yourself a labour of love.

All the other synths you named are plenty good. If you go after too many all at once, you can screw yourself over unintentionally. How about picking 2-3 and then absolutely sticking to those for the whole duration of your project. Or be hardcore and limit yourself to a single modular system, squeeze all you can out of its quirks. The most underestimated technique for this kinda sound is all the stuff you can do by sampling the synth, then using sampler glide/portamento pitchbend, and other modulation programming in the sampler to make the original sound even more expressive.

The sound you're after doesn't come from any kind of special trip-out synth. It's taking the sound from your favourite ones,
running it through guitar amps, pre's, resampling it through an old Akai, tape, using various delays and filthy reverbs in judicious amount, in any kind of combination.

For the lead foreground synth, try a chain involving chorus - hall reverb - short delay under 30ms and then EQ the send so it doesn't overwhelm the rest of the mix. Gives it that floaty airy bigger than life feel that you need.

    hello, geraldthegenius,

could not summarise better than Akrit did, really, everything is spot on... *yes*

this might be personal preference, also i do not want to sound just like some warmth guru, but these songs were done with, treated through, analogue gear, used quite, so to say, ouside the box, in really twisted ways, so i would suggest to do the sound design with one instrument with loads more warmth in it, with loads more nuance, playfulness, in its sound, by default (would choose diva for the task, compared with phonec, which has quite that required quirkyness, but, for me, in some strangely rigid manner)... *yes*

emulations of tape delays, spring reverbs, plate reverbs, old phasers, flangers, even some leslie box, might also be of great help... *yes*

the project seems to be in the need of loads of experimentation, layering similar but subtly differently treated sounds, for those floating, fluctuating, changes in timbre, with, helped by, automation... *yes*

later edit, all the above is for the sound design, the tracking, stages of the work, for the mixing stage, try to find here the people who are knowledgeable about the nebula stuff, as lately quite some heap of good news reared up about it... *yes*

wish your project enough time for reaching all the best sounding results, its great potential...

I have no sound on my internet PC so i could not hear your examples. But if u want trippy sounds i'd say Herc's Abakos or Abakos pro.

    It's Autechre not Autechture. :bleh:

Aphex used tape saturation as a big part in achieving his sound on a lot of releases. Fingerbib is a really great track but at that point it's not IDM. *no*

    +1

I love Lush 101. It's fast replacing my old Roland JD-990 for deep ambient pads.

Thanks for the advice folks!!! A bit too much at parts but I think I got what i'm looking for. I know what type o gear they used to get their sounds (i've watched alot of vids of their live shows and read too many articles on their setups) but being that I dont have shitons of money for analogue stuff I have to go the plugin route. I've been producing for 9+ years so I know all too well about reverbs, saturation, delays, etc...just wanted to know what everyone else uses for left-field sounds.

    @ Catalyst
Fingerbib is Intelligent Dance Music/Left-Field. People can argue all they want in the youtube comments about it being mellow electro or whatever but the whole Richard D James album was idm. I have the dudes entire discography...trust me man.
