Hmm I re-read your post and I missed the point indeed. I think I agree with you to some extent. AI is gonna radically shuffle the deck and big conglomerates will do anything to keep their slice, but history shows they always fail, although they're too big to really fail, so they just have to share the cake with newcomers like Spotify.

Oh fuck.. We're gonna have the AI Spotify, aren't we...

(did I get the point this time?)

One of the problems with this conversation is that we seem to think that we're better than AI when it comes to creative endeavours but I think we're going to change our minds about that pretty quickly. A scientist in this video (worth watching the whole thing) suggests that we humans are much more restricted in our thought processing (al la Foster).

Yeah, asides from people who are able to understand the sign of the times, should have known this thread will be a lot of "AI will never this" and "Computers not going to that".

It is just baffling how some humans openly express the hybris and naivity of disregarding the fact, that the current technological advancements are already WAY above their head. Ignoring the fact that we live in a highly technological age, that NONE of them fully understands. You may be expert in one element of science but no human will be capable of have a deep understanding of multiple scientific fileds. A major one being artificial intelligence. Heck, does anyone understand what is going on in some specific neural networks at all, when there's more and more evidence of researchers being surprised of the bevaviour of their own work? Besides that, mankind does not even fully understand what's going on in our own brain...
Well, that's some great starting point babbling about all of the things computers "will never be able" to do and what people in the future "never want to", isn't it?

You remember when people never wanted to listen to music that is not played by real acoustic instruments? Or the era where every artist was denied succes that used autotune? And all the songs that got broadly rejectd by a wide public, because it was mastered at a too high volume?
Oh and of course all the musicians that use a computer to make music! That never really prevailed, did it? And what about all the streaming music stuff? Most people will always prefer a bookshelf full of vinyl records over using the internet to listen to music.

And I didn't even get started on chess engines crushing every human (you may even take the ancient "stupid" ones, that only do calculations, not even remotely AI) or advanced chat bots.

Geez, watch the "AlphaGo" documentary or use chat gpt for once and get informed!

Think we all can agree that AI will replace anything that is replaceable, even now we are replaceable by other humans with more experience and better skills, masses were never a epitome of critical thinking. Shit just got real because there's no human that can compete with AI, but that just shows how pointless our lives really become, some folks take too much pride in their jobs and acquiring skills, that it became their whole identity, it's about time to question our purpose in this life.

The thought process I have a hard time to follow by some individuals, and it always seems to be the same people scared of every single unexpected events, is the idea that human creating and coding something will suddenly lose grasp of it and then we are all suddenly doomed and Sarah Connor will save us all.....

Don't get me wrong, I love fiction, but that just that....fiction.

It's almost like no one has an input in the AI and its out of control creating baby AI that started to create a substance that will ruin human existence while the complete opposite is actually happening and people are using it to complement other technologies.

Go and try to have a philosophic conversation with chatGPT on a subject you know in and out for example.....you'll get that whore apologizing in every single answer she will provide for generalizing and taking the infinite side path out of every ideas she will come up with.

It remember me of the 31st of December 1999 ''event'' where the earth was supposed to implode by not being able to switch to 2000 or the grandpa's coming out of churches saying how much computers is the devil.

I guess it has always been that way and will always be. It must have been the exact same with Horses and Cars at one point or the sight of a train by the Natives.

It's like human don't learn that fear won't lead them to anything constructive and start yapping, screaming and running around being scared of their shadows.

Just calm down, sit down and learn how to use it.

It is coming and we all know it.

A keyboard didn't melt your fingers when they started to implement computers in every home 35 years ago.

An AI wont melt your mind if you learn how to play with it.

Breath in, breath out. Everything is going to be just fine.

Demonizing it will just make you a lunatic first and then you will be out of touch with technology.

Start to learn the tech NOW or be left behind.

Its not more complicated then that.

I believe it's much more complicated. Humanity has suddenly realised that pretty much every job is at risk to robotics and AI, even in the creative industries. This impacts the fundamental structure of societies. Will billionaires (soon to be trillionaires when they start deploying this technology) support a universal basic income? If not, who pays them and who pays us to pay them? This is basically capitalism destroying itself, some would argue the logical outcome of a system that constantly funnels the majority of money upwards and increasingly so. The bottom widens and the top narrows, a true pyramid. Except robots and AI are about to replace the middle part of the pyramid and those who were in the middle will find themselves at the bottom. Left or right politics is irrelevant.

There's no apocalypse coming just like the computers were not made for a boss to do all by himself.

Stop being scared. Just learn the tool and you'll be just fine.

And don't worry, you still have many years to learn which part of the AI process you want to master. But basic AI language will be needed if you want to have control over it and not be left behind like grandpa rejecting computers and taking 5 minutes to click on Google Chrome (or actually finding the icon on their desktop) to go to their bank account.

I'm fine, I don't have many years left. If the youth of today have your attitude to AI they will sleep walk into poverty.

It's a corporate world, these people have no interest in how their actions to make more money impact anybody. You're free to disagree, so long as your disagreeing doesn't impact their actions to make more money.

Well, computers and the internet have led us into a workforce that's largely a service industry, the very jobs most at risk from AI.

You got a good point and I'm certainly not rejecting the idea that a lot of things will change.

What I am saying is that like with every new important technologies, people will need to adapt.

As much as it would be convenient in the present time to simply feel like there's nothing else to do and we will all die because XYZ, history also showed us that what we thought was the end of the world as we know it didn't necessarily mean it would be for an apocalytical reason like ''there wont be no middle class anymore and the street will be defended by Arnold Schworstertirschire trying to save humanity''.

I'm exaggerating but the point stay the same.

Human will adjust and we will have a a better way of life out of it. Just like Cars replacing Horses and Computers replacing big file cabinets.

Those technologies didn't eradicate the middle class, they made it more prominent.

I never denied that humans will adapt and survive, it's just that things are going to be very different and probably in a bad way. I don't think scientists are demanding we pause with AI research because of the AI itself, I think they're afraid of what corporations will do with it.

As a musician I'm looking forward to all the new AI stuff because I only make music for myself now, it's just a hobby. I wouldn't want to be in that professional world now though. Working musicians need to pre-empt what's coming and look for a niche, denying it and carrying on as normal will be their downfall. Live music will probably be the final frontier for AI for a long time yet.

At first it begin as a toy with clunky results and today I'm using it 90% of the time at my work, getting paid for generating images with a concrete context for a concrete goal. With sound it will occur the same. I'm using bark models to finally get my hands on tailor made voice samples with the phrases and entonations I want casue I wrote the lines.

And of course that is a tech that will define and change the society as we know it and it is a fucking shame that it has been created in this shitty system we have, but that's nor the tech nor the researchers who wrote the papers fault. Get unionize, go on strike and burn down the streets more often if you want another thing. Slay some Zar's progenie. But this is not different that any other mayor technological breaktrough in the history of mankind and, cause we are not as originals as we thought to be, history will repeat itself again. I just plan to enjoy it while I can.
