Great theme. Love the way the drums sound like they were programmed by someone who forgot to quantize.

Which brings me to my question: anyone feel that they know of a drum sample library that has this particular retro/transient quality?

 

AFAIK Britell used 808. No clue of how it was processed..

It’s this hip-hop sensibility that underpins what makes the Succession theme so addictive – a slowed down TR-808 provides the drunken rhythmic undertone to the melodic strings and piano on top; a classical refrain clashing head-on with the sound of the streets.

This doesn't cover the production too much, but interesting video nonetheless .

 

The kick is a sampled & pitched + distorded 808 kick, but snare and percussions are def. not 808.
Sounds like a low pitched hip-hop drumloop or something.

Low-fi hip-hop or old 90ties trip-hop loops would do the trick, but in this track it's probably sample-based and not loop-based.

 

The 808 has always annoyed me, as its out of tune with the music on the very low notes.

It's not what they used in the Succession theme but Tympo by Teletone would get you that

 

To me it barely recalls Clubbed to Death of Rob D, here reverb, gate and heavy filter.

 

Thats a pretty cool "drum machine".

Some really great sounds there.
