Got a new PC after my old one's HD died months ago.
    Been avoiding the Win11 update.
Today, I got a notification to restart for an update.
When I restarted it said it was downloading Win11 for install.
    I never authorized this.
    Shut it down with services.msc.
Is Microsoft going back on their promise not to force this update on us?
Is there a way to get security updates without Microsoft forcing us to our knees to accept their control over our lives?

I'm actually dealing with a burnt C:/ drive right now (thankfully my secondary, storage drive is alive and well—trying to be optimistic here...) so anything about PCs that falls out my mouth right now will be bitter.
That said, this exact same thing happened during the Win7–Win10 rollover. I can't be the only one who remembers seeing the wave of people who's PCs were crippled because they inadvertently got duped into "upgrading" to Win10. Microsoft doesn't give a *fuck* about its consumers/clients, same as Apple; they both know that they're the only players in the game, and their actions have always reflected that.
As for the security updates, I'd find an alternative; MS Defender has never been anything that I'd call irreplaceable.

I still am on Windows 10 myself... I think they are pretty sneaky with the prompts that almost lead you into allowing it, so maybe that's what happened in your case? My power went out and when my PC came back up, it had a splash screen for installing Windows 11... either do it now, or schedule it... had to alt-f4 out of it to not accept it. I'll eventually do it but my home desktop is also my work PC, so I can't just do this any time MS feels like doing it.

BTW, I've been keeping my PC fully up to date (outside of grabbing Windows 11).

I think this is the case. Lately I had to be pretty ingenious to get pass the rape-screen. They put the "not now" in a blind spot lower left corner, lighz grey on white.. next time I'll probably have to pass the 256th PacMan level glitch to avoid it

I plan to install 11 at some point, probably when OS NVMe dies, but it will be a clean Win reinstall. :disco:

Every time I got a new PC I do an image backup of the drive, then I fresh install a lite OS (no ms hassles).
In any case (warranty?) I can restore as new.

Simply turn your TPM Module off and they won't force any updates, because then your PC doesn't fit their Specs for an Update to Win 11.

im using NoThanksVirus Win Update Stop.

do you really need to upgrade your win10?

    warranty does also include software?

Just buy a computer without OS and software on it. Cheaper and you dont need to make a backup.

What happened to me is that without my consent during an update my desktop was changed to look like Win 11. Cortana disappeared, taskbar icons were centered, strange dark frames appeared on my windows' rims and some new taskbar items were added. I thought they upgraded my PC to Win 11, but after another restart all went back to normal.
Seems like their marketing trick. But it really got me scared.

Seems like everything these days is being down shoved people's throats.
I guess that's why "Comiefornia" is having an exodus of people tired of this nonsense of change for the sake of change bringing zero on that change.

You need to start treating your pc or laptop like an IT admin, full OS setup, everything off on the junk services, group policies applied, hosts files list of blocked microsoft servers added.
Install the apps you only need and now you have a backup of that system. Make a second backup and use that one to try out new apps that are released.

There's nothing wrong with Windows 11. I upgraded and everything I use still works fine (Kontakt, Cubase, Studio One, Omnisphere, etc. etc.) Why do so many people on here treat upgrading like the bogeyman? It's not a conspiracy ffs

I put question mark, but i think it could, cause that they come with preinstalled drivers and all sort of "service" proprietary sw, that incidentally is most of the times useless bloatware.

I personally don't care, I do tabula rasa of everything every time.
Agree. I did, but with an ASUS tower, it had a cd included with drivers for different OS.
But for laptop is more difficult, they usally are sold as they are, OS + drivers + bloatware included.

There is a sure all cure for all of this... If you want to retain control over your own machine and the bits on it, Simply turn off win update (patches can be applied piecemeal and only when they are needed). Turn OFF MS store, turn OFF all telemetry, turn OFF edge updater, take a big romp thru the "task scheduler" and remove all telemetry triggered events and apply firewall rules to the ones that cannot be removed. Simply put, media creation machines do not belong on the internet in the first place, but if you must you'll need to do a bit of work to make certain YOU control the machine not microsoft.
