Hi , I accidentally discovered someone on Instagram who sells cracked software....
What could be done about it except reporting him.
I think we all agree that cracked software should stay free or not?

We call all agree, but people sell drugs on instagram, and other scam/malicious types of things. Like it is the darkweb. Or eBay.

Social media is a cesspool.

 

Cracking software is illegal,
Downloading and using cracked software is illegal (in most country's)
Selling cracked software is illegal.

I see no difference.

You might find it morally wrong that another person is making money of the back of the hard and honest work of the cracking community. But don't forget that someone before that did some honest and hard work to make something beautiful that'll pay for his rent.

So, even ethically, I see no difference.

Side note: I think ethics are for spoiled hippies

 

People sell cracked software on Instagram, Tiktok, Telegram, Whatsapp, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Ebay, Craiglist etc. you going to report them all? It's futile, a person who makes money from selling cracked softwares is no different from a person who makes music or beats with cracked software. Hundreds of producers and artists release singles, albums, charge clients for beats, production etc. while using cracked software. If you use cracked software, you literally have no moral right to even have this discussion.

 

I remember a few years ago I searched Ebay for a second hand, cheaper U-HE Diva legit licence. At least, the cracked plugin made me want to purchase the synth, and I was broke at the time (I still am).

Couldn't find any interesting offer, but one seller offered the complete U-HE bundle for 70€, which seemed like a bargain. Before jumping in, I sent him a few questions, as I wanted to know if it was legit or not. The guy admitted it was cracked software, hence the "attractive" price. I didn't even bother to answer him that it was a scam to charge that much for cracked software. If he could find gullible persons to buy his s***, good for him. If he gets caught in the act, even better.

Just a guy trying to make some easy and quick money, there are tons of people like this. The only persons that really get hurt by such business are the developpers: if they make a good product and you want it, they deserve your money, period. Wait for a sale if you find the stuff too expensive.

If you find that selling cracked software is highly reprehensible, feel free to mount your white horse and go berserk on such scammers. But don't download and use cracked software, even for your personal use, because this is almost the same.

 

Unfortunately not the only place.
There's a site called MercadoLibre in Spanish, where many people also sell cracked software...
Not to speak about the "Super private reliable Torrent" sites that have this trick of "maintain your ratio or pay" another shady way to charge for warez.

I know which site & I didn't last on there. Never occured to me this was the reason, ha!
The pro's are on there, they said. You'll have fun they said.
Waited one year to register for that.

 

Theres TONS of social media accounts, websites and whatever you can think of with people selling cracks. I wouldn't bother looking for it, its an endless rabbit hole. Just report that and continue your life.

 

I don't agree. Finding a place like the sister site is shrewd, and paying for cracked software is stupid,. but in terms of legality? Well let's just say there is a reason we aren't allowed to post links to it on here and there is no distinction between paid for cracked sites and the sister site in that respect!

For years, it worked the right and usual way : you keep you torrents online and share to boost ratio.
Paid ppl didn't wanted to keep files online.

But after some years,it was impossible to maintain ratio.
And you needed to pay.

So i gone sister site + All Debrid / Real Debrid

it's been happening for years/decades online! & money is the root of all evil!

 

In first case you are making money from product that you don't own, in the second - (potentially) making money by using a tool you don't own.
Many people start with warez and go legit to support the developers after some time.
I can't see how anyone would defend scumbags that sell warez.

 

Back in the day, my barbar used to sell cracked PSX games and movies from his barbar shop. You would be sitting waiting for a haircut and someone would come in for a film and he would go in the back of the shop and come out with a box full of the latest titles. He once bragged that he made £700 selling copies of one game. The funny thing is that he seemed surprised when the cops and piracy people raided his house and shop. For some reason he blained me and my friend even though the dope was selling from his shop in broad daylight in front of total strangers.Needless to say I stopped going to his shop.

 

I tried crack once and it totally ruined the taste of my weed pipe. On the other hand, a good R2R crack is a great way to see if you really gel with a plugin before your money goes up in smoke.

you just trying to say something to make you feel good about yourself, if you want to try a plugin before you buy, there are demos. to the developer people who use cracked versions are also scumbags.

 

tbh if all elite plugins were selling for an average price of $49 or below, i would be buying MUCH MORE of them than i do now. the most expensive plugin i bought was about $129 or $169 that was like -60% on SALE and that i have tried before and that was really worth to have (mostly from UAD), NEVER EVER i will buy any vst plugin that exceeds that price... ever. the most part of the volume sale market is among OCCASIONAL bedroom producers and not pros. some of us may just buy it for fun, have fun with it for some time, get bored.. and maybe give up on making music! and thats $49 not lost, so it is up to the devs to decide if they want to sell a bare number of 1000 copies of a plugin for $349 each or 10000+ copies for $50 of the same plugin.

and at the end the invisible hand of the market will decide.

Well those are unsupported (and some unsupportable) claims.
To claim "there is no difference" is wrong outright.
You may see no differences, or judge the differences to be irrelevant, but that is NOT the same as saying "there is no difference".
The logic that follows that assumption is undermined by the weakness of the assumption.
Am i splitting hairs or being pedantic? No, I am NOT.
If we are talking about casual things then yes, i would say i am splitting hairs and everyone knows what you mean.
But to be taken seriously in a discussion like this (defining, generalizing and passing judgments) demands more sturdy logic.

barbatron and others have used phrases like "I don't see a difference...", and I think that's the best way to talk about these things. It implies an opinion instead of implying a fact.

 

No, I'm not trying to make myself feel good. I enjoy supporting the developers of plugins that I use, for without adding to their coffers in this capitalized parigdigm there would be far too few creating them and diversity wouldn't really be a thing. I wish that I had downloaded Omnisphere as cracked software before throwing good scratch at it. It took about three months of using it before I finally gave up on it completely. I could sell it for sure but in retrospect I would never have bought it to begin with. And...some English teacher might think someone a scumbag for not capitalizing the first word of a sentence but it wouldn't really make them a scumbag, would it? Who really gives a fuck what someone else thinks about an action that they have no idea of the motivation behind, know what I mean.

 

I'm in two minds about this. On one hand I feel bad that people are getting scammed, but on the other hand if you can't do a simple Google search and rely upon social media to find things like this... Well, that's totally on you, and you don't deserve anyone's pity.

 

I remember a long time ago someone tried to sell me warez.
The last software I paid was a videogame for MS-DOS 5 so... it was fun to play dumb.
