I don't know if any of you have heard of the Neural Amp Modeler but this thing is absolutely killer! It's like ToneX but free and open source. There's been a lot of improvements to the plugin already. It's open source, so the community can contribute to improvements as well. NAM is far better than Bias and is every bit as good as, or better than, ToneX and THU rig player. I've never had an AxeFx, Kemper, Quad Cortex or any of the expensive units but they would be very hard pressed to top it's sound. I HIGHLY recommend checking it out.

They also made a website recently for people to get started and find tone models more easily than the GitHub/Facebook mess.

Actually is not "as good as tonex or thu" it's actually better based on non biased tests, it captures all the low and high end. The only thing lacking is just a "pretty" interface and that's all, right now the plugin is super usable and everyone should try it :)

The responsiveness is very good and it feels like you are plugged into a real amp. I still like all the other amp related stuff though, and all modelling tech is useful in different ways.

Yeah I had a big long thing wrote out saying how it was better than axefx, Kemper, tonex, quad cortex etc based on the error margins of the profilers against the original tone but I thought it looked too long and technical and maybe fanboyish. Which I am a fan boy because, as you said, it IS better. I was just being modest so folks might actually believe me.

It's under development. There's a discord group focused on creating a proper place for this. It already looks awesome! There are some other sites created by users but ToneStack goals are aligned with NAM's.

It's good, but it eats up your CPU. NAM is using about 23%, compared to Tonex, which is using about 3%.

So, is it as good as Tonex? Absolutely not. Tone-wise, they are almost identical. At least, with a small amount of tweaking, you can get the exact tones out of both. But, NAM is utilizing almost ten times more processing power.

Thats beacuse NAM is so much better at capturing a real amp so YES it is as good as Tonex in fact it is so much better than Tonex as it doesnt have an annoying filter that Tonex has when it capture an amp.
If Tonex could capture an amp as good as NAM the CPU would be over 50% as Tonex has a shiny GUI

BTW there's another free profiler up - https://www.st-rock.com/vst/

The benefits are - very low CPU usage and that it's fricking STEREO, so finally you can use one instance/profile on a double track. CPU in stereo mode is less than one instance of ToneX and 10 times less than NAM. There's only a few profiles currently uploaded but looks like a converter from ToneX is coming too.

I installed it but there was no option to choose a location for the plugin, does anybody know what it's called and the default installation folder?

Answering my own question: I was looking for a VST2 installation of the plugin but it's actually a VST3.

Excited by this. I never enjoy the fact that people think you just stick one SM57 in front of an amp and that's it as good as "captured", so this type of amp modeller stuff always sounds so dull and lifeless to me. The fact that this is free is game-changing, though, and hopefully it leads to more people being able to add real, multi-mic, studio quality captures.

As long as I don't load any model, it's not consuming much. (about 2% indeed) But as soon as you load a model, your cpu will rise significantly.

See the attached picture. Only NAM, 1 model, nothing else.

And Tonex, with a model loaded. Nothing else:

everything is in the 20 - 27 range. Of course I haven't tested every available model, but the fifty or so I tested, were between those percentages.
