Yes, they tend to whip the llamas ass again.

    https://www.winamp.com/

It looks like Spotify and it will work like Patreon as I understand. Fans will support and artists will get 85% of it. Using winamp will be 55 dollars for a year but your first year will be free if you open a creator account before 15th of April.

I liked winamp mp3 player and still using it on Win10. So I got sympathy about this project although it doesn't look like they will succeed.

So, lemme guess, no compatibility with Winamp plugins?

Looks Electron based too... probably gonna eat much more RAM than my foobar2000, and take much longer to load playlists. Probably no tabbed playlists either.

Just a generic Spotify-looking media player using the Winamp name. But certainly must have some audience.

I was waiting for an update of the player, as I'm still using it too (on Win11, glad it's compatible) but I'm a bit disapointed by this. I guess I'll stay on v5 forever :)

It's seems like a good idea though, like Patreon meeting Spotify player (they really took inspiration on that, I guess they want people to feel home with their interface).

We'll see if user adopt it easily, which could be a good plan for creator, and also how it's going to work for creator, more like a Soundcloud/Bandcamp thing or more like a Spotify/Apple Music thing (with the need of an agregator)

the last thing most of us need help from Winamp with is "scarcity of content".

Good old Winamp was updated to v5.9.1 on Dec 21 2022. It works fine, no new features, but with many libraries updated and bugs removed.
For me, better sounding than foobar.
A week or so ago I saw that https://forums.winamp.com/ is out of order - no info, no error message, just a blank screen.
And DJEgg had the idea of improving Winamp, no clones or new stuff under the old name. v5.9.2 was in preparation.
Seems like they were enforced by owners of Winamp to abandon the project?
    Download is still possible:

And what's wrong with NFTs? Aren't they just another collectible fans can buy like a T-shirt or a coffee mug?

I'm going to pass on the paid version. I don't need a pay-to-play Winamp

Does this have much of the original spirit Justin Frankel imbued it with? Doesn't seem like it. I guess it can justify its existence by getting musicians paid.

I used to love Winamp, but it's going to be very hard to convert people at this stage, whether that's from the foobar crowd or the iTunes/Spotify crowd

Last time I used Winamp was on Windows 98 SE, brings back fond memories of the early days of MP3.

They took to long coming back to market after seizing development and support for version 5. Most of us have moved on to new solutons. Especially in the age of phones & tablets with ready to use media players.

My personal choice is VLC for video playback & AIMP for audio playback & conversion.

Just using and absolutely abusing Winamp's good name. Sad how greedy people are.

I've been using Foobar2k on Windows for a very long time and last time I had Winamp was a very long time ago. I actually never liked it much. Now I'm using Audacious on Linux. Fine player, although I miss some Foobar plugins, but I have new ones - Audacious supports LV2 and LADSPA plugins... and all I need on the output is LUveler to level the output loudness down.

Speaking of sound quality of digital software players is so completely useless. It's all about how comfortable you feel with it, ease of use, features like playlist manipulation etc.

Oh my Crom NFTs... just another clever way to milk some money out of stupid people.

Let me remind you all that the person behind Winamp as we know and came to appreciate it (Justin Frankel, the genius behind Reaper) has no ties whatsoever with this release or the company anymore.

I'm fine with AIMP. Winamp has become a very sus company and I'd advise anyone interested to be careful.

No, it's even worse in a way. The "token" is the end product, but the asset monetized via the blockchain. That's crypto speak for it's money spent on something not worth the money but provable someone spent it. You too can now contribute remotely to global climate change via the computing resources required to do the calculations about your T-shirt. It's like a Deforestation Fee.

When I still used to use windows I switched to AIMP as well (must have been 2004 or something). I really liked the VU Meters it had.
