I have used Cubase since the days of the Atari but over the last year I have been using Ableton Live and I must admit I get stuff together a lot quicker than in Cubase, sometimes I rewire them together and I still use Cubase for mastering

@fish mixx similar here rewire cubase and live....Live's been a bit of a revolution over the last few years....it seems anyone and everyone uses it at some point in they're production, even if just as a sketchpad to bounce in and out of!!!

Since the old monochrome atari - pure midi times - i mostly have worked with Steinbergs Cubase. (Just remember when 1 Floppy Disk did the thing, to start that proggie) ; )
As steinberg was not working well in the pentium 1 times – doing audio was really a PITA without hitting the CPU’s max. performance in a very short time or also the midi timing issues – i went for mac by using Logic, Opcode Studio Vision Pro or also ProTools. But after Cubase got better again, i was more back on PC. I have not really tried those things like Sonar, ableton, samplitude, reaper or whatever. The present Cubase 6 fit’s my workflow after all these years at best. And since the computing power of present Workstations is that great, it makes much fun to me. No hassle with performance and space. Either i am cub(i)ased or it’s a habit over all these years. Call it what you like. Every sequencer has it’s pro n cons. Some do more great job for a live performance, some do better help in the studio. It’s your workflow with the soft you use, that makes you able to evaluate, not my or another persons opinion. Try them, work with them, decide. If you take it serious with music, you’ll have the years for it. Maybe you even end up with a combination of 2 DAW’s. Who knows? You surely will.

    About the sound of DAW’s:
All you do work within a DAW is binary code // zero’s and ones. These binaries do not sound at all, unless you start to convert the code into analogue sound. And in fact the result of those binaries „should“ be all the same on every DAW. The AD or DA conversion makes the difference in sound, if any. It’s more important how you apply the plugins or place microphones, what converters you use and whatever, you name it. DAW’s do not sound but analogue mixing consoles do. Anyhow, if you personally think it sounds good, then it probably sounds good. What do we others have as a reference ?
    Only you have.

you mean if you only use the stock tools they offer?
cuz otherwise as long as they load third party plug-ins I'd say it's up to you as it's pretty much the same....
before i used cubase but because i went the x64 road, I now do pretty much everything with sonar
...and I sometimes use audition a bit as well as i've used it for years.

for mastering, the new T-racks suite is pretty good...

Hmm taken from steibergs forum the answer is from moderator Fredo

I must say I wouldn't be surprised if there was a slight signal influence when playing back in a DAW. Just the way an analogue desk has its own sound. The way the audio engine is written to colour a sound.

So what you are saying is:
Two different calculators, adding an substracting the same numbers can produce different results.
    !?

So put simply all audio engines is using the same calculation.

I use Ableton Live, 8.2.2 at the moment with Akai APC 40 & getting an MPK 49. I find it to be very intuative, and i find myself needing only Live, maybe get something else in the future, before this i just used Acid to muck about. So i can only recommend Live, does a great job.

Wow you were lucky :) I just had a commodore C64 using a midiInterface connected to my Roland MT32 and Alessis D8 :P
Those were the day.. then I upgraded to an Amiga and used Bars and Pipes, and went for a Mega STE + Megafile40 :) Years later I found an Atari STE that had 4mb Ram and I was able to hot her up a bit with 16mb Ram woohoo.
I still have the old hardware somewhere...
Cheerz! :D Atari for life :D

After reading most of the replays, I will share my story.
Take it as you wish, criticize me as much you want, you can even ban me from the site. I dont care.
I was Steinberg user for good 10 years. I lived from audio production and putting together the studios. There is more than 60 finished projects behind me and a lot of singles. An I was happy cubase user. My partner in studio was cubase user from atari times...
Everything was fine until Cubase SX 3.0. In previous versions you had an option, that you could insert magneto plugin on the recording channel, since version SX 3 they integrated it. It doesn't really matter the sampling rate or bit depth in that. Every track sounds a bit compressed and just a bit polished from then on. But it has a terrible error. It is just a bit metallic. If you sum a lot of tracks you can not get rid of it. Bitch is, you get used to it or you cannot stand it at all. Well i tolerated it for a year, switching cards, converters, monitors... Then I got an acoustic folk project. I nearly killed my self. After 10 years in studio I cannot get satisfing result with simple acoustic band. It was just kind of plastic. After all the tests I switched to DIGI 003 and pro tools LE at the time. Tracked material sounded so raw with the same band, I was scared if I will get that together. But after an hour of mix I was a happy camper. After a while I switched to mac and protools HD.

I was also one of the people thinking "this are just 0 and 1", "1+1 is 2!" .... One track..... you almost shouldn't notice the difference (except in melodyne studio which is really example of shitty sound, but excellent function). Now track 50+ tracks and sum them. Lets see if our daws really do calculate the same! Not to mention that horrible Steinberg tracking problem.

After 14 years I am still in business. Fact is i would also be with Nuendo, Logic, ...
It is something else in that equation that you missed. ME, MY Satisfaction. The day that I will be forced to do it agin just for the money (like the last year with steinberg) is the day I will certainly quit this business and go working on something else.

    Best regards!
    Mitja

so what's your point exactly?...that not all DAWs sound the same? (why do you say people will want to ban/flame you down??) that the vintage tape emulation in cubase sucks? lol ...personnaly i never noticed any conspicuous difference...
and yes, even though it's just about 0s and 1s, DAWs indeed sound slightly different but in the end...not that much different anyway...in sonar for instance you get to choose from 6 different algorithms for the panning law..but I never bothered to change the default one! I also used cubase for for a long time and switched to sonar recently, ..and I'm beginning to take to it....I dont like protools that much but that's just me...anyway, change is good, enjoy your protools HD! *yes*

For me, Cubase 6.5 for band demos, orchestral compositions and general work, Presonus Studio Pro 2 for mastering and for mastering/post work for sound design I use either Pro Tools or Sequoia, depending on client needs. Also use Ableton 8 with Reason ReWired in for electronic-based music production.
