Apollo Twin MK2 & MacBook Pro M1

Discussion in 'Studio' started by Vincent Price, Feb 22, 2023.

  1. Hello,

Just needing to know whether the Apollo Twin MK2 will still work with a thunderbolt 2 to USB-C cable as I’m getting a MacBook Pro M1

    Thanks

I would not recommend using an adapter to go from USB2-usb3/tb-3. You will end up with a USB 2 cable, and then the apple convertor.
I would avoid it, maybe more than I would even avoid buying a UAD. You are going for the headache trifecta here; you just need to install Luna.

  4. Just get a thunderbolt 2 to usb c cable?

this is what I would not want: https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MMEL2AM/A/thunderbolt-3-usb-c-to-thunderbolt-2-adapter

they fail. they are also annoying used in the direction of a laptop because they dangle. When that 32$ part fails, your 1000$ audio interface will not work until you order and receive a new one.

"For Mac computers that feature Thunderbolt 3 via USB-C, a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt adapter is required. The computer must meet the system requirements."

With the UAD as USB/Thunderbolt-2, you have no fallback connectivity like a USB-A connection; only the type 2.

  8. I asked on a forum elsewhere if I can
Use a USB C extension on the Apollo twin and adapter

Thunderbolt 2 out to the adapter and then that connected to a USB C extension into the MacBook

He said it wouldn’t work as there is no usb c extension that can be used

Is this correct, considering I found on Amazon here

I made following experience myself with different TB2 devices:

You have to use the Apple adapter mentioned above: https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MMEL2AM/A/thunderbolt-3-usb-c-to-thunderbolt-2-adapter as it is an electronic device and not just a simple adapter cable.

You have to plug it directly into the MacBook because of the high data rate, expansion cables will not work! Cables like that from amazon are just for charging or USB2 speed connections and not usable with thunderbolt.

Sorry @clone, you are wrong. As the Apollo Twin MKII is a thunderbolt-only device there is no other solution, no USB2 involved at all. And as he already owns the device and simply wants to continue using it, it's not very helpful to tell him not to buy UAD stuff.

Have used the TB2 to TB3-adapter since 2020 on M1-machines with an Apollo Twin MK2 without any problems whatsoever. Rock solid solution.

  11. Would I be ok using the extension with a usb c hub?

No. Use it only directly to your device's usb-c-ports. People have reported issues from hubs.

Same here, good performance using the TB2 to TB3 adapter with an Apollo Twin MkII + 2022 M1 Max Mac Studio. Works as expected. The current UAD software is a little buggy but that's semi-unrelated.
