I have a functioning set of omnisphere, keyscape and trilian VST3 plugins. All three are R2R keygen based.

Since the R2R release dates back a few months, I wanted to install the newest updates, but only the MORiA releases cover the newest Spectrasonics updates. I tried to install the Omnisphere MORiA release and, even though I followed their instructions, I still couldn't get Omnisphere to work. It constantly asks me for a registration key, and, when I use the R2R keygen, it doesn't work anymore on this MORiA VST3.

Is this just a faulty installtion on my end or are the two simply incompatible, i.e. I'd have to install a MORiA keygen based version first before proceeding to update the plugins?

My guess - try an older version of the R2R keygen, not the most recent one.

If that works, then I know where and who from Moria *obtained* "his" crack from (uncredited of course, because he likes to pretend he originated all this stuff, when he generally steals other people's patches...)

Did you replace the VST3 & VST2 in all locations? Example:

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3
    C:\Program Files\Steinberg\vstplugins
    C:\ProgramData\Spectrsonics\plug-ins\64bit

Just finished re-installing plugins. Omnisphere 2.5.0 R2R was re-installed after reading your post.
Next the Omnisphere 2.8.5c update from MORIA was installed.
    1. replaced plugin in the VST3 folder
    2. replaced the plugin in the VST folder
    3. replaced the VST3 & VST plugins in the C:\ProgramData\Spectrsonics\plug-ins\64bit folder

You must always realize that the Steam folder, which holds all the sounds and data, will never be altered! No matter if you use the Moria or R2R version. Only the official Patches and Sound sources updates from Spectrasonics will do that.
So switching from R2R to Moria is not a big deal. You can always do this. It will only affect the program, not the content.

Before I always went for the R2R version because this seemed more stable. But the last 2 releases I noticed that Moria is better and also has the advantage that you don't have deal with (one of the) the tedious keygens of R2R to activate because the plugins of Moria are already activated. And did not have any issues with any time bombs or 'not able to save or recall presets' issue.

So for me today Moria is better than R2R.

Does anyone have any experiences of removing MORiA?

is it as simple as removing the products related? Or is it something deeper than that?
