First here is my top Tier list of Best Distortion Plugins. Excluding that last c**p Wave Box.
That Rift plugin I didn't tried yet, but I will give him a chance.
Also for every distortion lover I will suggest to check Analoger from plug&mix. Check this plugin on PluginDoctor and lets discuss :D

How do 10 of the 12 plugins on that list have a 5/5 for sound quality and you don't even have Kelvin on there. You don't even know what sound quality is yet ;)

 

That plugin was released in 2021.

I hope you won't take offense when I say that it's perfectly okay for us to have differing opinions.
I was wondering if you wouldn't mind sharing some details about your studio setup with me?

I'm also curious about your approach to testing plugins. What kind of scale do you typically use to measure your input?
For instance, I personally use a VU meter calibrated to -18dBFS.
Fun fact: Most plugins are designed to perform optimally at that same level.

 

P.s. I have never seen this Kelvin plugin to be honest. I am excited to test new distortion plugin, and I will share my opinion here.

Kirchhoff vs Equilibrium/Pro-Q3:
- free dB/oct to tweak..... Want 13.4 dB/oct - get it.
- a lot of curves (Equilibrium has them too, but same models may differ)
- up to 117 bit maximum precision processing (Pro-q3 is 32 bit float, Equilibrium is 64 bit float). Linear phase is 64 bit float only.
- only 4 phase modes (minimum, analog, linear, mixed or so)
- extra 2x oversampling feature
- equilibrium has no sidechain and dynamic eq section, but full work with iir/fir and phases, impulse response, windowing function, length etc.

I think more stuff you may see there....

 

IDK man, I am a huge fan of Vanguard 2. I love making thick ambient drones with it. The sound of this synth when ran thru modulation/delay/reverb for soundscapes has this nice thickness to it I can find in other standbys like massive or serum. Plus the fact I can load up old patches I made in the first iteration of Vanguard, and LOAD OLD PROJECTS FROM GARAGEBAND WITH THE INSTANCE IN TACT UNCHANGED

For testing plugins i have a template project that's full of various individual sources (drums, guitar, vocal, bass, full mixes, etc), and i just load it and insert the plugin and play around. Since i've been using the same test sources for years i can tell exactly what the plugin is doing because of my familiarity with the sources.
I don't calibrate to -18dbfs because i don't believe i need to. Most plugins these days have input/output knobs, so the "-18dbfs optimization" theory is kind of a moot point now because you can control gain staging from within the plugin. Especially with saturation plugins, there's a drive knob. So -18dbfs is kinda of irrelevant in that context. 0% on the drive knob is gonna have the same effect at -18dbfs as it would on -8dbfs or -88dbfs. Increasing the drive knob is gonna have the same effect as adjusting the input...

Check it out. It's probably the most analog sounding saturator on the market. At least top 3
