My poor old Yamaha YPP-200 has a couple keys that no longer play correctly. One seems to have lost correct velocity/pressure sensitivity, when it plays at all, and another has to be struck hard at an angle to get it to play. Is there anyway to get in there and fix this thing? Is it optical? Electro/mechanical? Compressed air to blow out cookie crumbs? I bought it used at pawn shop a few years ago, got my money's worth, but replacing it would get expensive. It and my other synth do OK most of the time for a dumb drummer, but I need it to work better for real players on occasion. lol

The best info i could find was as follows

Yamaha Bubble Contact Strip Rubber contact strip, 12-note. This strip contains carbon contacts inside each "bubble". When a key is depressed, the key presses down on the bubble, and the carbon makes contact with the circuit board (the keyboard contact board).

So I would imagine that one of these has been damaged or overly compressed

http://www.syntaur.com/4138.html is the page and the price in $10 for a replacement 1 octave strip

Hope this is of use to you

I believe this is best answer, thanks to everybody. Doesn't look like any fun to take apart and work on, but I don't have enough money in it to spend more to have it professionally repaired.

My suggestion is to open and check insight yourself. The most of time is dust your enemy.
Clean all keyboards mechanics plastic parts with water and dish liquid
For the electric contacts (every think is looking like a electronic board) don't use water and don't touch them with your fingers. Instead use specific high pourcentage alcohol to clean.

After cleaning and testing you will see what is still ok or what should you replace.

I had similar problems like you in the past and after cleaning everything is ok now.

Would work on normal electrical contacts, but these are more akin to a membrane keyboard. The small discs of carbon can become chipped or cracked through heavy use or a drop, the only way to repair as they are sealed in a plastic strip is to replace the whole 12 note strip. Alcohol would make no difference to a sealed contact system. Would also not work on the many keyboards that use optical detection of movement and velocity.

as soon as I figure out how to get the thing apart, going to order a couple bubble strip 12 note contacts. The link above seems to have them. Anything special I need to know or anticipate before I start surgery? Yamaha manual doesn't have any diagrams of what I am getting into. They just tell you to have it repaired by an authorized etc. This model ypp-200 is discontinued, but it has built in speakers for just soft noodling, and the limited programs it has sound very nice for what it is. MIDI out, in, and through, so it works for me.

Thanks, Sir Silly. but it really is a YPP-200. Ha ha, our GIF avatars are jammin together.

One of my favorite drummers and one of my favorite comics. I can take 'em both for the golden cowbell, though. Well, maybe not Chad. Bring it!

Thanks for everybody's help. My Yamaha ypp-200 is back up and running. Not that difficult, once I got a little help. Thanks in particular to chippy33.

It is a pain to take apart the first time, but after you get the process down it's a breeze. I have a block of 6 keys that don't produce sound on my YPP-200, so I replaced the associated 12-key contact strip with a new one I purchased from Syntaur. Well it didn't help so I'm back to square one. Any suggestions or options?

If it is a "block" of keys, than probably the trace on the board for that block is broken (interrupted)
it is a relatively easy fix once you find where the trace is inerrupted... You have to bridge it with a wire (soldering is involved)
