Every DAW has defects. Nobody has to look hard to find them if they have been working in studios and with great musicians long enough.

The biggest defect is in people who attempt to compare apples with oranges which is what comparing DAWS is, as is attempting to pit one DAW against another. The next biggest defect is engineers who somehow manage to turn a silk purse into a sow's ear.

 

I cast a vote for Ableton. I switched completely over to it 2 years ago from Digital Performer and everyday it blowsmyOMFGmind! The things you can do w/ Macros and randomization is a game changer. I've been really interested in Bitwig, but I don't dig subscriptions. I don't even like paying my phone bill every month.

 

So once again the old discussion.

• Each daw has its advantages and disadvantages and daws are more similar than ever these days, as soon as a company adds something, the competition copies it. Some more, some less. ProTools has its advantages.

1. I personally like the workflow especially related to recording and mixing and mastering, especially the latter.
2. for producing purely digital music, protools is a disaster in my opinion.
3. So I personally use more than one DAW and ProTools is one of them.

• Whether ProTools still remains the industry standard depends on several factors.

1. As @The Pirate said, it depends on whether the big players continue to use it.
2. Does ProTools let the integration of new features slide. (We are facing an interesting time with regard to machine learning).
3. pricing model. (But this is not crucial for big studios, so not really decisive).
4. Does Avid open up a bit more. You can see from Microsoft that the company is doing much better since they opened up their eco-system and since they are doing more partnerships and ventures.

so my crystal ball says that won't happen anytime soon

I am an avid reaper user and would like to think it is a contender. However, an industry standard should operate the same for everyone, reaper is so customizable that it probably will very from studio to studio. I do realize portable versions and ini files can change how it operatrates and looks.

 

@Snare Gel I'm in the exact opposite boat, I used Ableton for 15 or so years, went to reaper have only opened Ableton up to transfer songs since. Ableton IMO is good at beat production, good for live stuff, good for clip mode... which ties into the first two.

but Ableton is a FUCKING NIGHTMARE compared to many other DAWs for huge amount of tracks, like no way would I ever ever ever pick Ableton over reaper/logic/pro tools/etc (more "standard" arrangement mode style DAWs) for mixing down a live band with a shit load of elements. nightmare.

Ableton is cool and I'm sure it would benefit a studio to have a copy but I just don't see it ever coming close to becoming the standard when there are so many other options that are obviously superior for mixing/mastering purposes. did Ableton ever figure out how to freeze group busses? without using a workaround that doesn't take into account latency? Did they ever figure out how to let you ACTUALLY bypass a plugin on the master bus? cause last time I used it a few months ago turning a plugin off took down the CPU but the latency remained. There are major flaws to Ableton when you look at it as a mixing centric program, and since I'm presuming that most people are in a studio with the music part mostly done it just seems unlikely as hell it'll ever be a standard for studios.

I spoke to Spielberg, he said the new industry stantard is VCV Rack into Harrison Mixbus.

 

Pro-Tools will probably be displaced by a newer version of Pro-Tools if another media giant decides to buy Avid. The vast majority of DAW will provide increasingly stiff competition in the home studio market but Pro Tools will still remain as the flag bearer due to it's status and because all major film/tv/music production studios continue to use it and most universities and audio engineering schools will continue to teach Pro Tools as the main studio DAW. The so-called "industry standard" title really doesn't mean much anymore since the vast majority of music made probably consists of collaborative parts each recorded/composed using various DAWs dependent on what those artists/composers/producers likely used at the time. It's like buying an "American Car" with 75% of the engine parts made in foreign countries...

I've been 'mixing' with just automation recently w/o moving any of the mixer faders. I'm going to try to incorporate a Faderfox EC4 as a controller when $ permits. FWIW, I'm still rocking Digital Peformer for heavy audio editing, mastering, and sample pack creation.

2. "it just seems unlikely as hell it'll ever be a standard for studios.": I work with other studios in California that do it 'professionally' and they are all on Pro Tools because they 'have to'. However, most clients bring in files on Ableton or Logic. Go figure.. As for the bugs you spoke about, I'm going to look into all of those as I'm curious myself.

3. "I agree 100% about subscriptions though lol": Subscriptions are all about making the merchant money and disempowering the consumer at this point. I'm getting rid of my NI plugins right now as I see the writing on the wall. And good for Ableton for not caving in to private equity trying to buy them out.
