are you sure your laptop i7-7700HQ isn't just overheating? I mean, I used i7-3630QM laptop years back and still works, but it wasn't able to sustain performance for long and always drops to 70-60% so I ended up artificially limiting it to 80% max so it does not overheat further (in Windows power settings),

I guess it's a useless information to you, but if I were building a desktop audio workstation nowadays, I wouldn't mind going as low as i5-12400 because past years I haven't run into any limitations with my i7-5820K, in audio world you don't really need more performance once you reach that point, but the key is consistency and adequate cooling, neither which laptops are at all designed for

overheating and limitation of cpu,after adding tracks and effects ,the cpumeter goes up and starts to produce noise.
laptops are weak for these kind of tasks,that's why i decided to upgrade my old pc to put less pressure on the laptop ( first i wanted to buy a used 3rd or 4th i7 cpu,after searching some stores i realized prices are not hugely different from 10th or 12th gen).
i'm going to use both for music (one for sound design,composing and...,other one for mixing and ...)

 

P cores and E cores have different speeds, DAWs need the computer to be optimized to make all cores work at the same level, with no differences between one core and another. In current DAWs there is no provision for the management of cores with different potential and we do not know if and when changes will be made to adapt to the efficient cores. So in order to also use the E cores it would be necessary to level all the cores at the same frequency but this would significantly reduce the performance, so it is necessary to disable all the E cores.

yes it's true, i just read about it,
you mentioned i5 12400,does it need a powerful cooler or stock cooler is enough?

 

7700hq is ok if you are prepared to render as you go, but the workflow is not ideal.

 

The supplied cooler is sufficient in a mid tower case. Set all cores to 4.30 GHz for better stability. Disable core parking and then all the usual power saving settings, C-State etc ...

 

in that case it's ok but sometimes it lacks on power

I'm coming to the party and I'm not leaving, cos my next CPU will probably be 12-core with a 4.7 GHz base clock

 

Considering most audio workloads happen in a serial fashion, any 12th gen intel chip is gonna be a very solid choice. ddr5 memory support is a nice thing to be ahead of the curve with imo and you get an upgrade path to 13th gen processors on the same socket, so you can go cheap now, and splurge on an insanely powerful processor down the line. EDIT: Also, it never hurts to buy a strong cooler for your CPU, most chips tend to run pretty hot out of the box these days, my personal choice is a Thermalright Peerless Assassin, it performs on par with 100+ dollar air coolers and only costs like 40$ in the US and it'll be a solid cooler for any upgrades you may buy down the line.
