So to be clear everyone is using one vintage EQ, one vintage comp, a couple instances of light delay and reverb. No vintage limiter for the master bus? I feel like people are going to cheat here...

    At least they should.

    They should not.

You mean in terms of level and peaks? Above a certain input level, tapes act like brickwall limiters with 0 attack and 0 release. No problem to achieve -13LUFS and higher - in principle. But the emus differ in the way they're doing this.

I assume once there's a winner the cat will ask for some kind of proof?

Also, remember when you install warez and windows does that whole "virus" thing? Well as it turns out it's been true all along, so all they have to do is ask R2R to remotely access our computers, see who's cheating, and detonate their power supply.

I understood that we should try to stick to one channelstrip, not one EQ and one compressor? Also, did you change the arrangement / timing of the tracks?

I hope we still have time until end of the week to submit?

How about giving a loudness target? Let's say we all aim at -14 LUFS?

Also, instead of using one channel strip, can we also use simple channel EQ (like Tokyo Dawn Slick EQ) and one simple compressor (like TDR Molotok)? Arguably Lindell channelstrip is still more powerful than these two, since Lindell has Gate / Expander option and different EQ / comp models. I just like the interface and usability of the Tokyo Dawn stuff more.

    That's some deep satire, man.

It's exactly the point. To work within the constraints of usability and interface the vintage hardware imposes.
I have to confess tho, a third of the way into the mix I realized that American Class A has a fairly modern spectrum analyzer on the top and then had to actively not look at it : D
Luckily the stepped nature of EQ and numbers on knobs fulfill the same role, but without a lot of "visual guessing" that shouldn't be there anyways.

You're right... I didn't think I tampered with the arrangement but apparently ableton didn't un-warp everything when I imported the stems. Oops

Wow, I have a pretty solid sounding mix using mainly Lindell 80 CS and Magnetite Tape Emulation + reverb send + delay send

At least it sounds good on my cheap AKG 240 Studio. Can't listen on my loudspeakers right now, but I hope the mix will roughly sound the same. Will take a pause now. Good luck to all fellow 'contestants'!

At this point i'm pretty sure the winner will be decided based on who followed the rules better (if at all)

    Not fixed.

Stricktly speaking you're correct. I doubt that there has ever been a studio with a Fairchild on every channel

    Yep.

Make it as loud as you see fit.

    Doesn't have stepped freqs.

I'll make a poll so all of you decide.

It's your's unless someone new drops something. I know I didn't do the directions correctly because I still don't really understand them.

I have now settled with Lindell 80. TDR Slick can be used "stepped" style by the way. You just have to hold CTRL while dialing the frequency. It's a deliberate feature.

I can't wait to hear all the great mixes! Thanks for starting this challenge!

Err, right, I didn't even know this. But it has 16 steps between only 30 and 100Hz so that's not really stepped.
