Wondering why torrents haven't become the preferred method of distribution of music software(s) vs. file hosting sites.

Any reasons>?

 

It is prefered by substantial amount of people, the others are concerned about security and privacy, guessing.

Torrents are dangerous in many parts of the world right now and cyberlockers are generally the preferred method. Plus one area that torrents suck at is when only a few people are sharing the file. With a cyberlocker none of that nonsense matters because you are downloading from a provider's infrastructure so it doesn't matter how many people have it. Also cyberlockers pay out to uploaders so there is incentive to keep these things going whereas with torrents it's always 1 seeder and a million leechers and people do it when they feel like it.

 

a lot of A -holes infect torrent files with viruses, spyware ect... at least sites like Audioz theres a lot less risk

True, uploaders get paid by cyberlockers, but seeders get their seed ratio as well, it's not money, but is some sort of "award" *yes*

 

Few days ago, I was searching for east west quantum leap gypsy library, found a single torrent. Downloaded that torrent and guess what? It was a rap album and a text file of the uploader apologizing and saying he wanted promotion.
That was ok, it wasn't a virus. Some years ago I wanted to download a game on torrents and it was just an archive with gibberish files. Other times I wanted to download a movie, and when tried to play that movie, all it was saying was to download some "codec" which was some kind of virus.
Those things don't happen on AudioZ. That's why I use this site, I can trust what I'm downloading here is what it says to be.

 

I'm actually against ratios particularly on private sites because it's a zero-sum game. In order to increase your ratio someone else's has to decrease. It's always a pain in the ass and I find that I download quickly and then have to leave my computer on for a decade, just doesn't seem fair. It's especially unfair to people whose upload and download speeds are asymmetric which is most of the planet.

 

there is a bit of an art in downloading torrents, recognizing fakes, searching for reasonable ratios, etc, but its binaries which is completely fecked up

If I'm not mistaken, torrents were the way things were released about 5 years back, then they became secondary to upload sites. The main torrent sites follow this site now. The bad thing about file hosting is that if you want an older release the links are usually dead but torrent sites allow you access years later.

Danger of getting sued, it depends on your location and whether you're using a VPN when you download. Clients in a swarm can easily see IP addresses of each other because that's how they connect and torrents weren't created with anonymity in mind. Then there's the danger of malware so it depends whether the torrent is clean which you have no way of knowing save for comments so make sure you read them. Also make sure to use a virus scanner before executing anything you've downloaded.

Everything Catalyst said is spot on which is why there is only 1 Torrent site that I use. It's private,ratioless, offers FTP service and also Browser based download links to it's members + all torrents are seeded from dedicated seedboxes.And you don't have to seed back if you don't want to. Of course others that are seeding\leeching can see the IP addresses in their client but seeing how it's a private site. I'm not too worried about it because most developers IP's have been banned from the site. When I look at AudioZ I sometimes shake my head. You don't even have to be a member to see what the site has to offer. Of course SAiNT and crew always adhere to any DCMAs but now even the "BL" is commented on the home page. Whats the point of having a black list if everybody knows about it. Now I know many of you prefer file lockers vs. torrents and that is fine but if you think it's safer then you would be wrong. All file locker companies do keep a log of IP's and if pushed will give up that info just like if the company that Hosts Audioz were to get pushed they would gladly give up the site and hand over any and all info.Nobody is really safe anymore!!!

 

The best defense is a good offense. Make your voice heard and stand up to the MAFIAA.

Lockers aren't safer but at least if you're only downloading then you have little chance of getting messed with. Of course that could change in the future at any time. With torrents you are constantly seeding. Private sites are good but they also aren't impervious to monitoring, still I guess you'd stand a better chance of having no problems. Really Mykal is right, we're not safe anymore.

 

O.T. -- Am I the only one that thinks that MAFIAA is a hell a lot like the MAFIA. As far as I can tell it's the biggest legal protection racket around

Oh yeah it's all a big scam. These scumbags are just thugs with lots of money and the piece of government they bought with it. Lobbying for cash is part of the problem and if they stopped that then this all wouldn't be happening.
