In Europe, people can receive very high fines if they are proved to download protected content.

What if they don't have enough money to pay the fines? They should be allowed to download and make music and make money, then they can pay the fines from part of the money.

In that case, both sides benefit. Even a fraction of the fines can go to the developers, if the authorities are a little fair.

    I have a mirror question.
Who I their right mind would be comfortable with displaying their name for hundreds, even thousands of complete strangers? Don't you value your personal space? Including personal informational space.

Almost everyone on the Internet uses illegal contents. Does FBI want to control everyone?

Then they'll have to arrest all people.

Even after the arrest, there is no guarantee that individuals will not use illegal content. Maybe that's why everyone likes the internet.

It was serious. Almost all attempts to deny people's access to illegal contents have failed.

A friend of mine has received a significant fine (some 5000 euros) after downloading a movie in Germany. But I think the law is about prohibiting sharing illegal content and not just obtaining or possessing it (except illegal sexual contents). Therefore using torrent is the cause of these legal processes as you unintentionally share it while downloading.

I'm not sure VPN can protect your identity at all. Authorities can go after those providers if they want to, every traffic event is recorded in server logs on the web. It may only difficult the investigation and the severeness of the case will determine the effort to chase you.

Privacy on the internet is essential. People should learn it in their cradle. That's why the older (50+) generations who have arrived lately on social media are in real danger. Many musicians are not tech savvy.

The solution for Ryck's idea (of jamming with other musicians) is that you are always free to make friends on the web and interact with them in PMs revealing your ID among them but not on public webpages.
Public appearance with real ID is only useful for public figures or for commercial purposes.

I talk about this space, not the internet in general.
Because I see that 90% are all anonymous and I'm not saying it's wrong. It is the choice of each one. But, precisely in a music forum where it is intended to share music, sometimes if you are anonymous, it limits you. As I said before, a person previously did not show me his work because according to him, who would notice.
It's just a question with a musical purpose, it doesn't try to change anything or anyone.
I see that some are intimidated, and I'm not trying to find out anyone's identity, nor do I care. I only relate it to music.

Wow that is quite a sense of humor you have there. You don't see the irony in that response?

I see that to everything I comment, you put disagreement and it amuses me. And when I'm talking about musicians being able to make music in community. Yours is nothing constructive, pure troll and hater. People like you, are the ones who without any argument, try to undermine the opinion of the other frustrated behind a device. keep it up
