I was about to order two 4TB 870 Evos to stuff in an OWC Mercury Elite Pro Dual Mini and use it as the only external SSD setup for storage AND sound libraries (mainly East West ones) but after reading some VERY recent reviews (february/march) I've found out that Samsung sent out a really shitty batch and they're failing left and right. Any way to know whether all of these have been bought or if they're still around?

 

Up. Looking for alternatives and in terms of TBW I haven't found anything higher than 600 (WD, SanDisk) except for Crucial's MX500s

 

I can't speak for the 4TB 970 EVOs, but I've purchased around 20 x 1TB EVOs in the last couple of years (for work), and all have been perfect.

 

Don't know about those batches...
I bought Samsung and Crucial MX mainly with no problem.

4 x 870 2TB here, none has failed me nor did I hear anything about bad batches..

For SSD, NVMe, Samsung still No.1 choice for me

i bought a 870 evo last year and it gave new life to my 8yr old computer

 

I have these two in my PC for almost 2 years now I always updated if there were any firmware available and they never ever failed on me and SSDfresh says my SSDs are still 100% health I keep them Optimized with SSD fresh highly recommend this software trimming, etc keeps your SSDs fresh and healthy

I filled them up many times with like 1-3 Gigabytes left sometimes no issues ever I just bought external HDD so to have free space again.

I have no experience with 4TB SSDs but I think stick with 2 TB max and buy more of them.
Personally I still don't trust 4 TB ssds

 

The faulty 870 Evos (2tb and especially 4tb) were produced in january/february 2022 and allegedly december 2021 too, it's a relatively "new" problem.

Way too expensive, those are datacenter-grade SSDs.

 

I'm someone who takes reviews about hard drives quite seriously. A guarantee is all well and good, but we all know the information we put on them is worth far more than the sum of its parts.

 

I'm getting an EW CC+ hard drive shipped to me and I do have a hard drive with all my libraries on it so the data isn't all that important, it's just that I'd rather avoid the hassle of returning it/them since I'll have to spend about a month in a hospital soon.

 

Damn.. It kind of makes the whole hard drive thing a bit irrelevant, don't it. I hope you get well soon..

 

The CC+ HD is only for storage and to avoid having to download 2+ TB of data in god knows how long, it's not suited for use with OPUS according to EW. The actual drives I'll be streaming the Opus/HALion content from are the ones I need to put in the OWC enclosure

 

You're right, mine are (much) older. Also saw a couple of threads about the problem. Even from this perspective the sum of these reports is still (probably) a very small nr. vs the nr. of drives sold. I took a peek at Backblase reports (no Samsung), with their exabytes of storage. Even they admit not having enough data but there is a general upward direction in the failure rate for 2021 SSDs vs previous years.

So yeah, for an individual, it's a (silicon) lottery..

 

Pressure at production = high failure rate.
We are going to see lower warranty rate, too.

 

I had a brand new 1tb (NVMe) 870 evo that died when I qf it; very annoying. Also fiddly lil bastards. Nov '21. The replacement (and the other 1tb drive installed at the same time) have been fine. Bit of a crapshoot, rly!

Was thinking of getting a 4tb drive, tbh; if they're even more unreliable, maybe not!

 

870 QVO/EVO seem to have the highest failure rates at 2 and 4tb, no idea what samsung's been up to but it's definitely an end of 2021 thing. I have two 850 Evos (though I was sure one of them was a Pro..) one of which is probably 8+ years old and one which is 5 years old, both are still going strong.

I really need those 4TB drive and out of all the TBW data from various manufacturers it seems like Crucial might be the best on paper with their 4TB MX500 being rated for 1000TBW instead of the competition's 600TBW (SanDisk, WD. Haven't found other 4TB SATA SSDs yet)

I'd be running them in RAID 0 and capped at USB 3 speeds so reliability is my main concern, I'll be writing to them a lot (all East West libraries at ~2.x TB, Iconica Opus, about 1.x TB of Kontakt libraries I need to sort, the old VSL in GIGA, etc etc and I'll probably keep writing to it a lot as I sort stuff out)
