do you think we would ever see a sort of 'betrayal' by the reaper developers, in terms of, maybe they're building a faithful audience and then some day they'll sell it to an investor or something?

I don't even dare to think what would happen if one or both Reaper devs had some serious/lethal accident,
but nature of Reaper licensing means, you don't need license at all, and even if you do, it doesn't do any online interaction/check,
sure if Reaper was sold, development may be stopped, but any previous versions should remain fully functional

seeing Justin's and Schwa's online video discussions, I don't think their mindset is anywhere close to situation they'd consider selling Reaper

I've enjoyed using Pro Tools for the past 10 years or so, and i'm no fanboy, i just like the workflow.
For me,and what i need it's perfect but it's really time to move on.
Not just because of the subscription plan but it has more to do with how resource heavy it is and the instability.
No other D.A.Ws have these problems.(from what i've seen)

There are so many other D.A.Ws that are far more advanced as far as features.
I'll give them a run over the next few months but so far it seems like Reaper and Bitwig are in the lead followed closely by Cubase and Studio One.

Barry was right though, Avid should get out of the consumer game and just stay in Hollywood.

R.I.P Avid (it was a good run)

good to hear, thank you. yeah my worry was just that one day they'd sell out and then the new owners would just implement a subscription lol.
also i am really curious to know if they have some safety system in place in case something happens to them. some programmers apparently do that.

Protools Flex is for those who have money and need big and stable system (broacast, movies...). The "big pharma" industrie does not care about 100 bucks/month...

    Wow...
When you pay more for , eg, the izotope advanced stuff, at least, you are getting more modules, more advanced features, etc etc.

Now, paying more just to get... more tracks...! It's totally insane.
Avid really milk all those old guys with tons of hardware... that require hundreds of i/o

    Tracks !

Any modern daw supports tons of tracks... we can easily add 100 tracks to cubase.. then copy paste a bunch of times... 5000 tracks... 10000 tracks... there is virtually no limit.

Avid goal is more clear than water : they limit the number of tracks on purpose, to force people into going hdx.

There are less and less folks like CLA... and there are more and more folks like Pensado... who basically only uses a few compressors, his beloved bricasti reverbs...and not much more...

$1,000 per year is over the top.
At present (only) ProTools is still the largest used software in audio post-production houses for film but that is changing year to year. After this announcement I imagine they will lose a lot of their business as well as a lot of the few remaining fully fledged major studios who use(d) it.

the problem with pro tools id not the price but pro tools it self if daws like nuendo 12 has even more features, a better midi editor and loads more top of the line things that are essential for a top of the line daw if pro tools has the same functionality and capabilities as nuendo 12 and then charged 999 i wouldn't be kinda fine but at this rate it is only reasonable to pay at max like 100 usd a yead and not 999

So by these prices, my Logic 10.5 usage (in lieu of protools) would have cost about 1200$.. so far.
Even call it half of that.

    The problem is the price.

if i was r2r i would skip on pro tools 1. its really not a good daw 2. the legal aspects

at this point companies like Steinburg bust be playing the long game, by making there security not as strong as avid beginners can easily get hold of free copies so as they become pros they will eventually buy the real deal whether its CB pro 12 or Nuendo or any other product from all the other smartass companies

i'v been using PT for 14 years and honestly im tired of it.. i bought Studio one but i dont really use it and eve got another license as sponsorship from Presonus and since december i'v been thinking on moving to Studio One completely. FL Studio has been my go to for production but im defensibly moving to SO for mixing.

S1 seems like a solid choice.
I have messed around with it here and there but i'm still pretty slow in using it.
Bitwig and Reaper seem to offer just as many features but i can definitely see why people are switching to S1.

how did you test the new Pro Tools on El Capitan and Hiigh Sierra, which both aren't supported and therefor won't run on?

i just finished converting my PT mixing template into Studio One.. i guess this is what avid needed to do for me to move on.. only reason im going to keep PT installed its because i receive a lot PT sessions so im just going to use it to export the audio and thats it.

Yeah,i'm keeping it installed also, just because i have a ton of sessions from 10 and 12.
I'll end up tracking them out as wavs so i can use them in whatever D.A.W i decide on in the future, but that's it.

Not only Avid, just look at Universal Audio who have been scamming with their Apollo DSP plugins joke for years as well
