I have been using virtual amps recently and was wondering what you all like and how you use them.

I have spent hours listening to the presets on many of them, trying to see which fits my song, such a wide range of sounds but too many to chose from. I liked Amplitubes favorite feature where you can pick the best ones and comeback later and retest.
The category filter is good also if you know which sound you are after, but I did find what sounds good is not always what you expect so I prefer testing them all which is time consuming.

Neural DSP have some nice sounds but I wish they would add a favorite feature like Amplitube.

Do you guys use the presets or is that just for novices like me?

I have added a poll so we can see what is the most popular, I will add more as you tell me.

Tell me which amps you use and why you like them and how you use them to get your sound. Do you compress and EQ after or before you add amps or at all? Have you ever used multiple amp plugins to get something strange or different?

So here's my list:
1. S Gear 2 by Scuffham (sit well in the mix)
2. Guitar Rig 6 Pro by NI (surprisingly have so many features)
3. Archetype Nolly and Plini (these two just amazing)

mostly using IR's to add some edge and tasty tone.
Made my own presets from factory presets (easier way)

I also own Amphub + Libra but rarely using it .. it just does not fit my taste (regretted buying this two)

 

I like Nolly and Cory Wong a lot but I also love STL Tones Howard Benson.

 

Oh crap, and Nembrini. Great stuff.

 

Softube for Marshalls (sounds 99% like my amps here), Overloud THU for Fenders (I like Jensens IRs) and Ashdown, Amplitube for Mesa Boogies (mostly Mark IV) and Ampeg SVT Suite for Ampeg sound.

Edit : Ashdown actually a bass amp model in Overloud THU. Hope you will edit the poll.

TH-U Slate Edition

 

I'll have to pick Amplitube. Not the best sounding in general imo, but it's the only amp sim i can get to sound close to what my real gear sounds like, so i'm kind of forced to call it my favourite.

 

Sigh. My poor Muramasa Electrum gets no love whatsoever. None zero zip. I had demo'd Amplitube 5 and it was great, especially for the Satriani Rockman interface, but because I was running out of disk space, I looked for something with a lighter footprint. Line 6 Helix native was pretty nice as was Kuassa. Kuassa I especially liked since it had oversampling. The rig setup I used and enjoyed the most, though, was the Electrum. Yeah, it's nothing special in the high gain/distortion area, but that's not my style of playing. I lean towards classic rock, pop, ska, funk and reggae, and the Electrum fit that bill nicely.

EQ, both. First to get rid of the unwanted parts, after ... err, too and to shape it, ofc.
Additional compression or not depends on the distortion (which already comes with compression).

I personally can get good sounds out of all of them with the right IRs. I'm surprised Helix isn't listed.

 

Kemper and Helix Native, plus Ampeg for bass.

I also like Bassdude for jammin' new ideas, but I think that's the Nembrini guy who programmed it?

I already voted for Neural so I can't vote for STL or Nembrini but overall, I think Neural actually is my favorite.

 

Blue Cat - Destructor VST

Destructor is a distortion simulation and amp modeler. The name suggests high-gain territory, but it’s equally capable of producing softly compressed guitar tones and even crystal clean sounds. Blue Cat bases their modeling on what they call the perceptual model as opposed to the painstaking process of emulating hardware electronics. This means that the signal chain is bare minimum, and the sounds are made to fit into the mix effortlessly.

Since yesterday my new favorite is Aurora Rhino (not in your list), what a good sim. Softube Marshall Bluesbreaker and Brainworx Rockrack (first version) stay close along with Neural DSP Cory Wong and Abasi.
