how do you make an orchestral stab?

    An orchestra hit, also known as an orchestral hit, orchestra stab, or orchestral stab, is a synthesized sound created through the layering of the sounds of a number of different orchestral instruments playing a single staccato note or chord. The orchestra hit sound was propagated by the use of early samplers, particularly the Fairlight CMI where it was known as the ORCH5 sample.

    @BEAT16 I think the OP is trying to create one from scratch using orchestral instruments, not looking for a premade one.

    Find instruments with fast attack (like timbani?) and so on and then combine them

    The easiest way is a sampled hit. The above mentioned CMI for example, but you can get it also from Stravinsky Firebird (see at 1:30), and many other.

    If you want overlay several sections, start with timpani, strings, brass, woods, slight and quick glissando up for the las three.
