They are patching security bugs to prevent others to use it as freeware.

 

I honestly don't think they are working to make the protection even stronger or more unbreakable. If for this reason they already had unbeatable protection and they abandoned it. They could have chosen the same protection as PT Ultimate (in fact R2R never managed to figure it out with Avid), but they didn't take it into consideration. I think Steinberg aims to get the most users and finally bill by selling as much, like Ableton. And I think it's the right move. So, I don't believe Steinberg cares that much about protection at this point.

 

They do care. Just wait.

 

That makes no sense to me with any developer, or for that matter, anyone who creates anything in any field. While I am sure there are masochists in the world, it makes no sense to spend all of your days creating a new version of anything to not care whether anyone buys it or rips it off or likes it when they complete it. I could understand it if they never put it on the Internet or in public because they only did it for themselves because it was a personal achievement only; but not in something they put out to the world.
Again, that just makes no sense. There is a difference between not caring and something not being an immediate priority.

Of course I'm not saying Steinberg is releasing freeware versions guys. Ableton is cracked every month, Waves as well, Fabfilter, DMG and many others of that big caliber. The world is made up of millions of legit users. In my opinion Steinberg will not invest a substantial portion of the budget in protection. Because I repeat, he already had an inviolable protection, yet he abandoned it. In the future we will find out what Steinberg has reserved for us with Nuendo. In the meantime, however, I bought Cubase Pro for the first time in my life, and I am very happy with my choice. Maybe Steinberg made the right choice then. At least it worked with me.

 

Steinbug aren't in control of themselves anymore. Yamaha are. If they see obvious problems (their last, massive upgrade failure when nobody could authorize C11) with the tech; and with dongles (lulz) being an 80s idea that has failed? (Organizations, local USB ports missing nao.) Let alone the ~20% performance hit? Why have they kept this dumb idea for so long is a bigger mystery!

Another user have already talked about this, but I dunno if everyone have fully realized it now: their new protection system is far, far, far more easier to handle for organizations and big companies, like post-production studios, universities, NGOs, (private) schools, etc...

It's what we call here: "institutional clients".

I really think that this kind of clients is their real target, and that all their energy is oriented in this direction. It's the real reason why the protection have changed, why they dump the dongle, because dongles management can be a real and unbearable nightmare when you have hundreds and hundreds of employees, they can easily be stolen and trafficked, etc.

This dongle-free protection system will surely evolve, but now as we speak there is no coming-back, no possibility of change, knowing that they have largely and publicly announced this change everywhere, on social networks, in videos, on different forums etc.

So this is a unquestionable fact: ALL the steinberg products will migrate to the new license system, there will be no exception. Dongle and MCFACT are definitively over, forever.

With this important move, I think they will slowly become a real and credible alternative to Pro Tools, with this easy to handle license system, compared to the Avid one, which years after years became heavier and heavier... Avid is, and I have no doubt about that, the biggest enemy of Yamaha / Steinberg.

And if I had to choose, I'm pretty sure that this decision comes directly from Yamaha. Steinberg direction alone could never-ever made a so audacious - and risky - choice. This is a bet. But when you bet, you can very well loose everything.
